En nuestro día número 2 recorriendo Asturias la correspondiente parada era en Gijón (En Asturiano Xixón). Ese día llovió muchísimo pero no fue impedimento para conocer esta hermosa Ciudad costera. Desde Cangas de Onis en bus fue una hora y media aproximadamente, el viaje nos sirvió para admirar el paisaje lleno de montañas, casitas con establos, muchos animales y la neblina que abrazaba cada pueblito al que llegábamos.

On our second day touring Asturias, our stop was in Gijón (Xixón in Asturian). It rained heavily that day, but that didn't stop us from exploring this beautiful coastal city. It took about an hour and a half to get there by bus from Cangas de Onís, and the trip gave us a chance to admire the landscape full of mountains, little houses with barns, lots of animals, and the mist that enveloped each little town we passed through.

Al llegar pude notar que aunque llovía todos estaban de igual manera en las calles con sus chubasqueros y paraguas correspondientes para llevar el día, digamos que al ser del norte estas acostumbrado. Mi primera impresión aunque era todo gris fue emocionarme ya que de una vez recorrimos todo el malecón.

When we arrived, I noticed that even though it was raining, everyone was out on the streets wearing raincoats and carrying umbrellas to get through the day. I guess when you're from the north, you're used to it. My first impression, even though everything was gray, was one of excitement, as we walked the entire length of the boardwalk.

Plaza del Marqués

Árbol de Sidra - Cedar Tree

Más adelante está, imposible no mirarla ya que llama muchísimo la atención es muy grande y está formada con solo y exclusivamente botellas de Sidra, 3200 botellas aproximadamente colocadas todas boca abajo simbolizando el escanciado (Técnica que usan para servir la Sidra). Esta acción fue resultado de un concurso organizado por la empresa municipal del medio ambiente de Gijón en el año 2013. Muy ingenioso!

A menudo que recorriamos el puerto procedimos a subir por un cerro que nos dirigía a la bateria de Santa Catalina. Tiene unas vistas espectaculares y puedes observar todo el mar, cuenta la historia de la defensa marítima de Gijón, un antiguo complejo militar artillero del siglo XVII cuya función era defender la península de Santa Catalina de piratas y corsarios. Fue un asentamiento romano desde donde evitaban los asedios por la costa gracias a su vista sobre el mar. Tiene 2 viejos cañones (en la batería baja) orientados al mar -actualmente no los tiene, se está rehabilitando-.

We often walked around the port and climbed a hill that led us to the Santa Catalina battery. It has spectacular views and you can see the whole sea. It tells the story of Gijón's maritime defense, an old 17th-century military artillery complex whose function was to defend the Santa Catalina peninsula from pirates and privateers. It was a Roman settlement from where they avoided sieges along the coast thanks to its view of the sea. It has two old cannons (in the lower battery) facing the sea—it doesn't have them now, as it is being renovated.

Esto fue lo más interesante de todo el cerro de santa catalina, El monumento de Chillida, Elogio del Horizonte se conoce popularmente como "El váter de king kong".
Escultura de hormigón de Eduardo Chillida, conecta la tierra, el cielo y el mar. Su nombre Elogio del horizonte hace referencia al límite visual entre la tierra y el cielo, la frontera entre lo infinito y lo conocido. Es un templo para la contemplación, muchos lo utilizan para meditar, incluso dicen que si te situas en el centro de él y miras hacia el mar oyes el sonido de las olas cuando rompen en el acantilado.

Actualmente también está restaurándose y estaba rodeado de vallas por lo que no pude disfrutar del sonido que tanto nos recomendaron vivir como experiencia.

This concrete sculpture by Eduardo Chillida connects the earth, the sky, and the sea. Its name, Elogio del horizonte, refers to the visual boundary between the earth and the sky, the frontier between the infinite and the known. It is a temple for contemplation, and many people use it for meditation. They even say that if you stand in the center of it and look out to sea, you can hear the sound of the waves breaking on the cliffs.

It is currently undergoing restoration and was surrounded by fences, so I was unable to enjoy the sound that we were so highly recommended to experience.

Plaza mayor

Recorrimos varias calles por dentro de la Ciudad y hasta que llegamos al centro y conocimos la plaza mayor, como cualquiera de otra ciudad y en ella se encuentra la sede principal del ayuntamiento.

We walked through several streets inside the city until we reached the center and saw the main square, like any other city, where the main town hall is located.

Visitamos también el mercado del sur, típico de cualquier mercado con sus respectivas tiendas de comida y sobretodo mucho pero muchos tipos de quesos. Ésta está ubicada en la Plaza del seis de agosto, es muy fácil llegar a ella.

We also visited the southern market, typical of any market with its respective food shops and, above all, many, many types of cheese. It is located in the Plaza del Seis de Agosto and is very easy to get to.

Antigua pescadería Municipal

Encontramos en la Plaza Campinos de Begoña un espacio super cool para tomar fotos, era una especie de camino forrado con cerámicas preciosas y daban a la entrada de una Parroquia. Me imaginé en primavera adornado precioso con las flores y arbustos enrollados y cayendo desde arriba de la madera.

We found a super cool spot to take photos in Plaza Campinos de Begoña. It was a kind of path lined with beautiful ceramics that led to the entrance of a parish church. I imagined it in spring, beautifully decorated with flowers and bushes winding around and falling from above the wood.

Ya luego de recorrer un poco el centro, tomé varias fotos de lugares que me parecían atractivos, y decidimos ir al Acuario, es la cosa más extraordinaria que pueden hacer, tomé demasiadas fotografías y videos por eso se los mostraré aparte, pero por los momentos, este ha sido mi recorrido de un día por las hermosas calles de Gijón, espero hayan disfrutado el recorrido. After walking around downtown for a while, I took several photos of places that I found attractive, and we decided to go to the Aquarium, which is the most extraordinary thing you can do.
