Birds that came to my window today

Hello @featheredfriends @community.

I am Danaidh B posting to you from Scotland!

Thanks for having me here! :)

Today I put some food out and played Spotify’s bird noises, left my camera on record by my window whilst I made a cake and went for a nice shower whilst the kids were out for the day with their mum…
ahhh.

I got some footage of the local residents here in the massive eucalyptus blue gum tree and surrounding buildings.

I put porridge oats, walnuts and lentils out this week, popular with all the “window birds” you’re about to see.

This “Great Tit” or Parus Major flew in within about 0.9 of a second after getting frightened by the “new thing” (my camera) trying to grab a walnut nugget then flew off again within the 1.0 second. I almost bypassed it on the video it was that fast!

All of these Parus major shots were taken from a single 1.0 second frame on a video.

This little chap came along swiftly after the Great Tit.

We all know this one, the “Blue Tit” or Cyanistes caeruleus.

I just love Blue Tits, so cheeky and cute looking. I’m more than happy to feed them with anything’s suitable I can find from the kitchen, they are feisty like little ‘blue and yellow’ Robins.

“what are you looking at?”

The common “Wood Pigeon” or Columba palumbus This is actually one of my favourite birds believe it or not. I think they’re quite eloquent and pretty looking.
Lovely iridescent purple and green neck.

You can see the pigeon picks up the food and jerks forward to catch it whilst simultaneously getting the food down quicker and moving towards food faster! Clever!

They remind me of the “Congo Grey Parrot” or * Psittacus erithacus*

I really got into birds during lockdown, we had so much time to explore and so many birds to learn and see!

I am only 30 so I thought I would start young and learn and remember as many birds, names and calls etc as I could.

It’s a new hobby of mine :)

That’s all today folks!

Thank you for reading my first post in #featheredfriends #community on #hive

Please stay tuned and join me next time 🙏

That's a nice selection. We put some seed out for the birds and mostly get tits or sparrows. I have logged a fair few species in the garden including woodpeckers and sparrowhawks. I'm looking to make the place more wildlife friendly as I know some are struggling. We don't see the numbers we had even just a few years ago.

Thanks :) yeah these are the consistent regulars, the pigeon you see there actually has a brand new next outside our kitchen window with a big white egg. We get a great view! More coming soon on that!

That’s great you’re into birds, I really got stuck in during the lockdowns.
That’s great you got a sparrow hawk! Wow, set up some cameras and leave them, see what you get.

Yeah it’s all about the insect and plant count. Do a rough count of different species of plants in your garden, jam pack your garden with flowers and put damp/old logs etc, places for insects to hide, and put plenty nuts out. done birds can smell nuts from over a mile away!

We've twice had a sparrowhawk take out a collared dove. Just part of nature. Also had foxes, hedgehogs and squirrels around. A camera would be cool, but it's a big garden, so hard to cover it all.

That’s amazing man. Good sightings!
You can set up food camera traps to capture exactly what you want to attract to a specific area of your garden ;)

I started some 3 years ago, never thought I would be into it too. It is amazing how many birds live around us, unnoticed by many people.

That’s it! Once you see them and like them, you see them and like them everywhere you go!
It’s important we learn whilst we are still young because life is very short and everything we know helps the next generation know quicker so we can help acknoand save these amazing animals we live with. They were here before us and they’ll be there after us

There's nothing like enjoying a new hobby and bird watching is a great one. You captured some wonderful pics by putting your camera on the windowsill and taking pictures while you were busy doing other things. I'll have to give that a try.

For sure! Birds are so interesting and it takes a lot of patience to be an enthusiast.
Yeah I thought it’d be a good idea as they all seem to show up as soon as I leave the room, and especially they love it when the washing machine is on for some reason? Haha

I might want to run a load of laundry before heading outside to birdwatch

Getting started young remembering the birds is exciting something we were taught in identifying normally on given names here in the country, still makes life easier finding the scientific names later !LOLZ

Amazing feeder to capture photography!
