Curator Cat: September 1st is Ginger Cat Appreciation Day!
Greetings Fabulous Felines and Hoomans of Hivelandia and surrounding communities!
Question: Do you have a ginger or orange cat in your life?

If so, tmorrow — September 1st — is Ginger Cat Appreciation Day!
Ginger Cat Appreciation Day dates back to 2014, and was created by software engineer Chris Roy in memory of his beloved 17-year-old ginger cat Doobert.

Our previous cat "Orange" was a true ginger cat
Ginger cats are often said to have their own unique traits and personalities, and this particular day is now dedicated to celebrating the warmth and wonder of orange cats, and to encourage their rescue and adoption.
Around here, ginger cats are represented by our own Shangri who is at least part ginger although also fluffy and white.

Previously, my Hoomans had an orange cat with a stubby tail like mine, named "Orange" — not very original, I know — who was much beloved, but died at the much too young age of just four years.
There is much lore and many jokes surrounding ginger cats including the fact that they can be a bit ditzy and allegedly share a single brain cell that periodically shows up and allows them to do amazing things while the rest of the time they're just a little bit vacant.

Orange was quite a goof!
Personally, I think that's a little bit rude to ginger cats... but I can also see how it is funny! Shangri is actually very smart, much of the time... as well as extremely sweet and good natured.
One of the interesting things about ginger cats is their unusual genetics. Typically, 75%-80% of ginger cats are male because the gene that gives the orange coloration is tied to the X-chromosome.

Shangri, showing off his copper colored eyes!
Although we may look at a ginger cat and declare that it is basically "orange" all gingers are basically a form of tabby cat with stripes even though the striping may only be visible in certain lights.
Much like Hooman gingers, one of the unique traits of ginger cats is that they may have freckles! These freckles typically are visible either on their noses or on their lips. Our Shangri already has a small freckle on his nose, although this tends to be a characteristic that develops more thoroughly as the cat ages.

Shangri has a freckle on his nose!
Shangri, being more buff-to-apricot colored than outright orange has what is known as the "dilute gene." The dilute gene is recessive and must be inherited from both parents, which is why cream colored or pale buff cats are quite rare.
On the other hand, Shangri's copper colored eyes are not connected to the color of his coat since eyes and coat color are determined by two different parts of the genetic pattern.

So let's celebrate the orange cats in our lives on September 1st... give them a bit of extra playtime and a treat or two!
Thanks for coming by to visit our cat blog, and we hope to see you again soon! Until then, have a wonderful remainder of your week!

These are some of the more active Cat Communities — why not join them ALL? Many of the allow you to share your cat posts, even if you started at a different community!
HiveCats by @curatorcat is a central "gathering place" for cat content on Hive; promoting the use of the #hivecats tag for feline content!
Cat Snaps by @manorvillemike is a place to post pictures of your cats when you don't have a whole lot to say beyond just sharing your cute photos!
Caturday by @saboin is a community where we get to celebrate posts relating to Saturday — aka "Caturday" — our own special day!
Cat Photos by @andrarchy is a "mixed use" cat content community; posts can be just photos or longer, as long as the subject is CATS!
Cats by @captainklaus (and Sissi!) is another "general" cat content community.
There are a number of other feline communities listed on Hive, but I am not sharing them for now as they have not had any activity (by their Admins OR users) since the Steem/Hive fork. Updates as they become available!
