Could Hive Content Thrive Beyond Seven Days?

avatar

I'm not sure how you feel about the 7-day period that a Hive post has in order to get rewarded, but sometimes I find it a bit odd that it's limited that way. Some people have suggested that Hive posts should have more time to earn rewards. In fact, there have been discussions in the past about the idea of "evergreen" content.

At first, I wasn’t really interested in the concept, since I’ve gotten used to the current reward system. I mean, it’s been like this for as long as I can remember, and it’s never changed. I guess making a major change like that might not be ideal—it could potentially have a catastrophic impact on the entire ecosystem if we tamper with it. It seems much safer to stick with a system that already works rather than risk breaking it.

That said, I'm still hopeful that someday, a smart contract could be implemented on top of the current system to make evergreen content feasible. I’m not sure if it’s even possible, but hopefully someone will figure out a way to make it happen.

So, why did I suddenly start thinking about this again? Well, it’s because of my recent TikTok experience that brought the idea back to mind. I had been inactive on TikTok for about a week—I hadn’t even opened the app. A combination of a busy week and some health issues led me to take a short break from posting.

But then, earlier today, I decided to open the app and post a new video. To my surprise, I had tons of notifications—LOL. I honestly wasn’t expecting that at all. I’m so used to how things work here on Hive: if I don’t post anything or engage with anyone for a week, my notifications will definitely be zero. Usually, only my most recent post gets any engagement. A post that’s even just a day old often doesn’t get any more attention—no upvotes, no comments. That’s just how things typically go on Hive.

So, naturally, I’d assume that if I stay inactive here for a week, I won’t receive any engagement or notifications either.

But TikTok works differently, and that’s because of the platform’s algorithm. It continues to work in the background, pushing content even when the creator is inactive. My video posts kept getting views and engagement during the week I was offline. In fact, I even gained five new followers during that time.

It’s fascinating to think about the possibilities—what if Hive posts could continue generating engagement or even rewards weeks, months, or years after being published? As long as people still find the content relevant, they could still upvote it and provide the rewards they believe it deserves. That could really change the dynamics of content creation on Hive. I imagine it would encourage users to focus more on producing high-quality, long-lasting content.

Personally, I’d probably invest more in the production value of my posts if I knew they had the potential to earn continuously over time. But then again, maybe that kind of model just isn’t workable here on Hive—for reasons I might not fully understand.

In the end, every platform has its own unique system, and Hive’s 7-day reward window is part of what defines it. Still, imagining a future where content remains evergreen and continuously appreciated is an exciting thought. Whether or not it becomes a reality, it's always worth exploring how we can evolve while preserving what already works.

I really prefer that it stays as it is, receiving the rewards after 7 days, although it would be fine for me if it were a wildcard and gave us the option of selecting the publication that is chosen for that purpose

There are a couple of ways you can reward high quality content that is outside the reward window that don't require changing the code:

  • Leave a tip
  • leave a comment and if the author replies, upvote their reply.

I think these are great ways to incentivize the value-for-value philosophy.

I love the upvoting the reply, I feel like it is a far better way to reward engagement on the chain. :)

You can also create a comment and set the beneficiary appropriately.

This is a compelling perspective on Hive's reward system. The concept of 'evergreen' content is intriguing—imagine posts continuing to earn rewards as long as they're relevant. It could shift the focus towards creating lasting value. However, as you mentioned, implementing such a change would require careful consideration to avoid unintended consequences. It's a thought-provoking idea that could spark meaningful discussions about the evolution of content monetization on Hive.

In fact I have thought about it since I registered here. I wonder whether it is possible for post to be rewarded more than seven day, perhaps lifetime. I think that seven day period is particularly not suitable for vlogs.

The perspective and comparison you bring is interesting.
It can certainly spark a good debate.
Thank you for bringing it up!

Discoverability of old content on hive is trash. Unless you go Looking for something on HIVE (all the front ends have really slow search mechanisms) it is hard to ascertain the publish date of anything (without large amounts of digging), which is really important - because if I'm trying to find out how to do something... well, process might have changed.

Communities are helpful, but they have a stream of content.

Perhaps someone wants to cook something up that feeds people a random, ancient HIVE post, and then... when someone chooses to vote on it, it creates a comment with the proceeds going to the original author using the beneficiary system.

Looks awesome.

How about the discoverability of old content? Any better, faster, indexed search engines? When I want to find old posts of my own to share with my friends or family, all I do is google my hive username and the name of the search (I've done ... thousands of posts) - because any search I do in peakd or hive.blog takes forever and doesn't give me the results from my own account.

It would be faster to do a sql query on hivesql :D

Hive system is making progress and effort on a daily basis and with time there will still be more changes that will be added to it. its system is really different from tik tok but despite that it is a place to be and a home for engagement.

When I got here posts had two payouts, 24hours and 30days.
If you want to evergreen content you can make a comment, set the beneficiary to the author, and self vote it.

It is possible to tip, meaning there is an evergreen component ....

In PeakD, you can include an old post in a new collection -- and that can be done indefinitely

The thing is, though, on Hive there is no substitute for engagement -- to get that tip or get that new collection out there to be seen, one still has to be engaging around it.

I haven't done the Collection before but I think it's a great tool in order to bring more visibility to a post.

Should try it soon to see how it really works. Thanks for sharing.

And yes tipping is good too however it doesn't have the benefit similar to a curation reward. But it's definitely a good way to support authors.

The thing about a collection is, theme and title it well. You can put posts related to your post's subject in there, and pick a set of strong hashtags and pay close attention to what community to do that in. If you add other people's posts in there, describe them well, and mention the creator -- "I added this post by @curamax because ... ." OBVIOUSLY, they will check it out, read your compliment to their posts, and be interested in who you are. Again: engagement is key and Hive is a place in which many fine creators are starving for attention even during the first seven days, to say nothing of afterward.

Picking a strong trend and community means you know where to go prime the pump: go comment and vote thoughtfully on a lot of authors who are writing well about what you are about to post about AND/OR, go comment and vote on those who follow you and let them know you are around. Generate a lot of activity, and then publish into it.

Use the short-form Hive things well -- build an audience on Waves or Threads or Snaps (or ALL OF THEM) and then link to your collection there over the course of your day, with a good photo and strong hashtags.

This obviously works for every day posts as well -- it's a bit of work, but look at what you will accomplish inside the existing system.

The post: seven days
The collection: another seven days
The short-form post: another seven days

Bonus: Put a portion of your increased earnings in HBD savings. My posts and collections from previous years still pay me. Think about it... you already have evergreen access...
