An Evening Ride to Sembawang Park

Last night, I decided to check out Sembawang Park.

My main goal was actually very simple: I wanted to catch the sunset scene there and also get a feel for the overall vibe of the park. It has been a while since my previous visit, so I thought it would be a good time to return. More importantly, it gave me another good reason to go cycling.

One thing I can say right away is that getting to Sembawang Park by bicycle is actually quite enjoyable. The park connectors leading there are smooth and well-paved, and the terrain is mostly flat. There are a few slight uphill and downhill sections here and there, but overall it is a very relaxed and pleasant ride. Compared to the Mandai Park Connector, this route felt much more forgiving and definitely more fun for a casual evening cycling trip.

The only problem was that I arrived too late.

The sunset sky that I had hoped to photograph was already gone, replaced by that deep blue evening sky. It was a little disappointing, not going to lie, because I had imagined catching those warm sunset colors by the sea. But since I was already there, I told myself that I might as well make the most of the visit and explore the park properly.

The first area I checked out was the beach. Of course, I still took a bunch of photos, even though the darker lighting did not reveal much detail in the background. Still, the atmosphere was nice. There is something peaceful about being near the water in the evening, even when the light is no longer ideal for photography.

What surprised me the most was the number of visitors in the park. I saw families spending time together, groups of young teens hanging out, and a very large group of fishing enthusiasts gathered at the jetty. I do not think I have ever seen so many fishing rods in one place before. The jetty itself is not even that big, yet it looked completely packed with people trying their luck.

Naturally, I got curious and went closer to check. I noticed a pail with a fish inside that looked a bit like a swordfish, or at least something with a long and striking shape.

I am not exactly sure what it was, but it definitely looked like a good catch. Seeing the fishermen there added a lot of life to the place. It made the park feel active and communal, even at night.

After checking out the beach and the jetty, I continued cycling around the park to see what other amenities it had.

One thing I quickly noticed was how many barbecue pits there were. That immediately explained why the park had so many visitors. Sembawang Park really feels like one of those places designed for people to gather, relax, and spend long hours outdoors. It is not just somewhere people pass through. It is a place where people actually stay.

I also came across a restaurant with very nice architecture, and I have to say it stood out beautifully at night. The building had a charming, elegant appearance that gave the park a bit of character beyond just being a coastal green space. I was also impressed by how many customers it had. It looked lively and well patronized, which tells me that the business is doing quite well in that location.

Another thing I appreciated was the washing area near the beach. It is such a practical feature, especially for people who want to step onto the sand, walk by the shore, or let their kids play without having to leave with sandy feet.

And speaking of kids, there is also a playground in the park. I found one with a very cool warship theme, and I thought it was awesome. It matched the coastal setting so well and made the playground feel much more unique than the usual designs.

Even though I missed the sunset I originally came for, I would still say the visit was worth it. Sometimes a place surprises you in ways you did not plan for. Instead of getting the sunset photos I wanted, I ended up discovering the lively evening atmosphere of Sembawang Park, from the beachgoers and anglers to the families and diners enjoying the park in their own way.

I will definitely come back again, hopefully a little earlier next time, so I can finally capture the sunset views and maybe take some videos too.
