A Quiet Morning at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve
Two days ago, I decided to take a day off from work and spend the morning doing something that I always find rewarding: cycling to a nature destination. This time, I set my sights on Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, one of the most well-known wetland parks in the northwest of Singapore, near the Kranji area.

I have visited Sungei Buloh before, but those previous visits were usually on weekends, when the park tends to attract more people. This time, I was curious to see how different it would feel on a weekday morning. Would it still have visitors, or would it be much quieter?

Getting to Sungei Buloh by public transport is actually quite easy, since the bus stop is located just across the park entrance. Cycling there, however, is a slightly different story. The route is a combination of urban cycling and a bit of off-road adventure. There are parts along the way where the crossing is not exactly bicycle-friendly, especially near the bridge across the river where there is no proper cycling lane. Because of that, I would say that if you plan to cycle there, your bicycle needs to be versatile enough to handle a few rougher sections.
Still, once I reached the park, I immediately felt that the journey was worth it.

There is something very calming about Sungei Buloh. The whole place feels serene, and it does such a good job of preserving and showcasing the natural wetland environment of Singapore. Since it is located farther away from the city center, there were very few people around during my visit. Personally, I actually enjoyed that. For someone like me who loves experiencing nature in a more peaceful and undisturbed setting, I would gladly choose a place like this over the more popular parks in the city.

Just a short walk from the entrance is the visitor center. I think I arrived quite early because the only staff member I saw at first was the security guard, who kindly reminded me to park my bicycle at the designated bicycle parking area since bicycles are not allowed inside the nature park. That was perfectly fine with me. In fact, I think walking through a nature park is a much better experience than cycling through it. Walking gives you more time to slow down, notice the details, and really appreciate the surroundings.

One of the highlights of my visit was definitely the lotus pond. I really liked how they arranged large boulders for visitors to step on while exploring the pond area. It made the whole experience feel more personal and immersive, and at the same time, it added a bit of fun because the stones were placed in a way that required a little balance and attention.

It is not yet the lotus season, so the flowers had not fully bloomed. Even so, the pond was still beautiful in its own quiet way. I noticed tiny fishes swimming in the water, and they looked fascinating when viewed up close. The funny thing was that they moved away so quickly the moment I pointed my camera at them. It made me think that maybe they are still not used to visitors observing them too closely.

Another thing that made the visit extra enjoyable was the sunlight. The morning sunshine filtering through the leaves and reflecting on the grass made the entire park feel even more alive. I spent some time doing a bit of photography practice, trying to frame the sunlight through leaves and blades of grass. I am not sure if every shot turned out exactly the way I imagined, but I had a lot of fun experimenting, and I think that is what matters most.

Overall, this trip was such a satisfying experience. It felt even more rewarding knowing that I had cycled all the way there before enjoying the peaceful walk inside the reserve. Sungei Buloh may not be the easiest place to reach by bicycle, but it offers the kind of calm and natural beauty that makes the effort worthwhile.
See you on my next cycling adventure!

That place looks like the one I would spend at least 2-3 walks during the week! Also, going there in the morning was a very good move, as you had the whole park to yourself for your enjoyment! 😃 Only by looking at your photos, the calm water and tall grass, did I relax my soul completely!
And playing with sun rays while they are penetrating through trees is one of my favorite things to do...
