Russula Mushrooms [ENG-PT/BR]
🍄 My first contribution to this community, managed by @ewkaw, is to share with you the mushrooms known as “Russula” or “Russúlas.”
One of my resolutions during the holidays was to spend more time in contact with nature. I live in a city full of concrete, cars, and people. For my own balance, I need to immerse myself more in natural spaces. The first step I took was to participate in a hike last Sunday, called “Descida à Mata Senhora da Alegria” [Eng: Descent to the Senhora da Alegria Forest].
The “Mata Senhora da Alegria” is a bio-reserve located in Almalaguês, Coimbra - central Portugal. This forest has a diverse ecosystem with trees, shrubs, fungi, and streams.
It was there that I found these strange mushrooms, with otherworldly shapes. I asked the biologist from the Milvoz association, one of the organizers of the walk, about the name of these curious mushrooms. Without certainty, he replied that they were probably “Russulas,” but they could also be “Lactarius.” He suggested that I do some research, which I accepted and looked at several websites.
These mushrooms, with more than 780 different species spread across the world, play a very important role in the ecosystem: they establish mutualistic, or symbiotic, relationships with the trees they are associated with. These include oak and beech trees, and they can be found in late summer and fall.
They belong to the “Order Russulales,” “Genus Russula.” The “Lactarius” also belong to this order, although there are differences between them. (Hence the biologist's uncertainty).
The color can vary between white and dark yellow, depending on the species. They have fragile gills that make them easy to break apart. Not all species are edible, but Russula virescens and Russula vesca are excellent.

Cogumelos Russula
Sugeriu-me fazer uma pesquiza, aceitei e vi diversos websites.
(Daí a incerteza do biólogo).

Oh this post makes me miss my foraging missions with my sister! We'd wat a few days after rainfall, and while the ground was still damp, she had found secret locations of mushrooms that the huge amount of foragers miss!
Yes, mushrooms with gills are usually a "dead giveaway" that they're not for consumption, but there are one or two exceptions. But, it's always good to err on the side of caution. Having an expert with you makes an enormous difference! We have one called a Pine Ring, which looks very similar.
There's nothing like the taste of mushrooms you've foraged yourself!
