Who was Betty Boop?

Betty Boop was the first human female character in the history of animation film and the first to star in a cartoon.

The cartoon was created by Grim Natwick but it was the New York animators the Fleischer Brothers who brought it to life. Max, the eldest of the three, produced; Lou animated and then supervised the sound; and the youngest brother, Dave, directed.

These photographs, taken in the window of a souvenir store, are a tribute to the baby-voiced singer with her famous legs and big seductive eyes.

Esther Jones is the woman who gave birth to Betty Boop. Known by her stage name “Baby Esther”, she performed at the Cotton Club in New York in the 1920s.

The sexy little brunette, and her legendary catchphrase “Boop-oop-a-doop”, has never aged and remains an enigma. She appeared in the 1930s and is still an icon of causes today. She made the front pages of the New Yorker as a way of denouncing sexual harassment, which gave rise to the #Metoo movement.
