Until the end of the year Portugal will be commemorating the 50th anniversary of April 25, 1974. This historic date marks the end of the former fascist regime.

There are countless initiatives in different Portuguese cities to mark the anniversary. In Faro, I discovered this mural representing the radio program that set the tone for the revolution: the song “Grândola, Vila Morena” by Zeca Afonso was the signal for the Cavalry Practical School to go ahead with the operation planned to overthrow the regime of the time.

This historic broadcast took place on Radio Renascença's “Limite” program. At 00.25, the voice of journalist and writer Leite de Vasconcelos is heard: “Grândola, Vila Morena, land of fraternity, the people are the ones who command the most, inside you, O city”, the beginning of Zeca Afonso's lyrics.

Everything had been strategically arranged the days before with Carlos Contreiras, one of the revolution's commanders. He met with Álvaro Guerra, a journalist from República, who made the contacts with friends from the radio. Initially it was going to be Emissora Nacional, but the idea wasn't accepted. He moved to Rádio Renascença in an independent program called “Limite”, produced by opponents of the regime.
