Hamel Alley - My Wednesday Walk [EN/ES]

I invite you to get to know a small street in Centro Habana loaded with feeling and Yoruba syncretism: Hamel's Alley.

It turns out that today I had to go out to do some shopping and walking and walking, I realized that I was very close to this place, so I decided to take a detour to bring you today to Hamel's alley. Welcome to my Wednesday walk.

Te invito a conocer una pequeña calle de Centro Habana cargada de sentimiento y sincretismo yoruba: El callejón de Hamel.

Resulta que hoy tuve que salir a hacer unas diligencias y caminando y caminando, me di cuenta que estaba muy cerca de este lugar, así que decidí desviarme para traerles hoy al callejón de Hamel. Bienvenidos a mi caminata de miércoles.

Situated between Aramburu and Hospital streets, in the popular Cayo Hueso neighborhood in Centro Habana, Cuba, you will find Hamel's Alley. This is a magical place, one of those that have their own personality, its smell, taste, color and sound are very particular. Just by stepping on it you understand that you are in a Yoruba pantheon. Here this religion is very present and the alley is a sample of it.

Its creator is the Cuban sculptor and muralist Salvador Gonzalez Escalona, who decided one day in 1990 to undertake the repair of the facades in poor condition of the houses that are in the site.

That picturesque repair of facades transcended for its peculiarity, turning the site into a tourist attraction that gave life back to that depressed locality.

Although the real action of this place happens on Sundays, when the neighbors dressed as ancient African gods, the Orishas, go out to the alley to welcome visitors to the rhythm of the drums.

One of the first "altars" as I like to call them is this one that you can see in the image dedicated to the national hero of Cuba, José Julián Martí Pérez, poet and one of the heroes of the struggle for Cuban independence. In this sculpture a bust of Martí is accompanied by a Cuban flag and a series of religious elements (Yoruba religion), making clear allusion to the presence of slaves in the Cuban independence struggles and the anti-slavery thought of the Cuban hero. This sculpture closes with a beautiful verse by Martí: Art I am among the arts and in the forests, forest I am. I believe that this phrase sums up perfectly the two fundamental facets in the life of this great man: on the one hand a poet and writer, after all an artist, and on the other hand a patriot, a tireless fighter for the freedom of his homeland, my homeland.

Sadly, that freedom for which so many men and women have given their lives has been taken away again and again, but that is definitely material for another post.

Ubicado entre las calles Aramburu y Hospital, en el popular Barrio de Cayo Hueso en Centro Habana, Cuba, se encuentra el Callejón de Hamel. Este es un sitio mágico, de esos que tienen personalidad propia, su olor, sabor, color y sonido son muy particulares. Tan solo pisarlo entiendes que estás en un panteón yoruba Aquí esta religión está muy presente y el callejón es una muestra de ello.

Su creador es el escultor y muralista cubano Salvador González Escalona, el cual decidió un día del año 1990 emprender la reparación de las fachadas en mal estado de las casas que en el sitio se encuentran.

Aquella pintoresca reparación de fachadas trascendió por su peculiaridad, convirtiéndose hasta el día de hoy en un atractivo turístico que le devolvió la vida a aquella deprimida localidad.

Aunque la verdadera acción de este lugar ocurre los domingos, cuando los vecinos vestidos como antiguos dioses africanos, los Orishas, salen al callejón a recibir a los visitantes al ritmo de los tambores.

Uno de los primeros “altares” como me gusta llamarlos es este que pueden ver la imagen dedicado al héroe nacional de Cuba, José Julián Martí Pérez, poeta y uno de los próceres de la lucha por la independencia cubana. En esta escultura un busto de Martí se acompaña de una bandera cubana y de una serie de elementos de corte religioso (religión yoruba), haciendo clara alusión a la presencia de los esclavos en las gestas independentistas cubanas y al pensamiento anti-esclavista del héroe cubano. Cierra esta escultura un hermoso verso de Martí: Arte soy entre las artes y en los montes, monte soy. Creo que esta frase resume a la perfección las dos facetas fundamentales en la vida de este gran hombre: por un lado poeta y escritor, al fin y al cabo un artista y por el otro un patriota, un luchador incansable por la libertad de su patria, mi patria.

Tristemente esa libertad por la que tantos hombres y mujeres han dado su vida ha sido arrebatada una y otra vez, pero eso definitivamente es material para otro post.

The bathtubs, converted into paintings, display illustrations of The Little Prince (the famous novel by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry) and some phrases with interesting reflections:

⁃ For love and respect.
⁃ And the powerful?
⁃ For gold and leisure.

⁃ Grandmother where does Selfish live?
⁃ In house of Loneliness.
⁃ And where does Goodness live?
⁃ Inside oneself.

⁃ Grandmother, what is envy?
⁃ The slow and terrible death of those who have no life.

⁃ Why does hate exist grandmother?
⁃ Because to that poor word as a little girl no one said: you are beautiful.

Las bañeras, convertidas en lienzos, lucen ilustraciones de El Principito (la famosa novela de Antoine de Saint-Exupéry) y algunas frases con interesantes reflexiones:

⁃ Abuela, ¿por qué luchan los pueblos?
⁃ Por el amor y el respecto.
⁃ ¿Y los poderosos?
⁃ Por el oro y el ocio.

⁃ ¿Abuela donde vive Egoísta?
⁃ En casa de Soledad.
⁃ ¿Y en dónde vive Bondad?
⁃ Dentro de uno mismo.

⁃ Abuela, ¿qué es la envidia?
⁃ La muerte lenta y terrible de los que no tienen vida.

⁃ ¿Por qué existe el odio abuela?
⁃ Porque a esa pobre palabra de niña nadie le dijo: Eres bella.

The benches are another curious aspect of the place, in my tour I could see El banco de Pancho 🤣 and La Nave del Olvido. Could it be that if I sit on it I forget my problems? 🤔 I better not do the test, I might even forget my Hive passwords 😬.

Los bancos son otro aspecto curioso del lugar, en mi recorrido pude ver El banco de Pancho 🤣 y La Nave del Olvido. ¿Será que si me siento en él se me olvidan mis problemas? 🤔 Mejor no hago la prueba, capaz que se me olviden hasta mis contraseñas de Hive 😬.

I liked this last bench because of the message written on it: "It is better to surrender your weapons than to fight without morale".

If you look closely, the benches are made from old bathtubs cut in half, probably removed from some ruined building.

Este último banco me gustó por el mensaje que tiene escrito: “Es mejor entregar las armas que combatir sin moral”.

Si te fijas bien, los bancos son hechos a partir de bañaderas antiguas cortadas a la mitad, seguramente retiradas de algún edificio en ruinas.

Continuing on my way, I found a mural with a dedication:

To the master Don Fernando Ortiz
To the neighborhood of Cayo Hueso
Born in this alley of Centro Habana named Hamel
On April 21, 1990, the first mural on the public road dedicated to Afro-Cuban culture.
Iremes, Orishas, legends of black gods (...)

Next to this mural, a stand where they sell healing herbs, by the time I passed through the stand was closed.

All these murals are covered with interesting messages. I would like to translate them all into English so you can appreciate them, but it would make this post too long and I don't think that's the idea.

Siguiendo mi camino, encontré un mural con una dedicatoria:

Al maestro Don Fernando Ortiz
Al barrio de Cayo Hueso
Nace en este callejón de Centro Habana nombrado Hamel
El 21 de abrirl de 1990 el primer mural en la la vía pública dedicada a la cultura afrocubana.
Iremes, Orishas, leyendas de dioses negros (...)

Junto a este mural, un puesto donde venden yerbas curativas, para el momento que pasé por e callejón se encontraba cerrado.

Todos estos murales están cubiertos de interesantes mensajes. Quisiera traducirlos todos al inglés para que los puedas apreciar, pero alargaría demasiado este post y creo que no es la idea.

Other elements crossed my path, such as this antique cash register or this chair turned into a throne, sword included. Could it be the Yoruba iron throne? If so, Cuba would be No Winter Island (understand the reference to Game of Thrones).

Otros elementos se cruzaron por mi camino, como esta caja registradora antigua o esta silla convertida en trono, con espada incluida. ¿Será el trono de hierro Yoruba? Si fuera así, Cuba sería No Winter Island (entiéndase la referencia a Game of Thrones).

Finally, on the way out, I found this mural, created from the colors of the Cuban flag, even the lone star is present. The sea, the Cuban woman, the saints and some punishing handcuffs are some of the elements that I was able to identify.

Por último, a la salida, me encontré con este mural, creado a partir de los colores de la bandera cubana, incluso la estrella solitaria está presente. El mar, la mujer cubana, los santos y unas esposas de castigo, son algunos de los elementos que logré identificar.
