In Gebelein, near Thebes, the heat of the desert preserved the soft tissues of various human bodies from 5,000 years ago. These mummies show traces of tattoos on the skin. These bodies are housed by the British Museum between the late 19th and early 20th centuries and are the oldest examples of tattooed Egyptian mummies ever found. They are the first known figurative tattoos and were possibly made using soot as a pigment. These tattoos could be discovered thanks to the latest scientific methods such as CT scans, radiocarbon dating and infrared imaging.
