Who am I? 👩

Hey guys! I'm Críscia, but you can call me Cris (easier, right?). Oh yeah, this is me:

me and my camera.jpeg

Me and my 📷

I am a biologist, nature photographer, surfer, surf photographer, content creator for some companies, and community builder, necessarily in that order. I have no idea how I manage to be all this (the truth is I can't, but we'll find a way, haha). But I will tell here in this post who I am through my story and how I got to Hive.

How I Became a Biologist (and Nature Photographer)

I spent my entire childhood and youth living in the countryside of the state of Espírito Santo (Brazil), a little far from the sea. But my family always went to my uncle's beach house at the end of every year and during the summer holidays. Since I was a child, I have loved watching Globo Repórter (a TV program with many programs about nature), and I was passionate about programs that showed marine life. This passion grew so much in me that I wanted to study more about it. There was no other way around it, so I went to study biology and specialize in marine biology. That's how I became a biologist.

I went to college in Rio de Janeiro. Within biology, there are many options; you have to leave it having already chosen something to dedicate yourself to. And when I found my true passion in marine biology, I found myself working on monitoring whales and dolphins and studying their behavior and ecology. I know, it's awesome. Jumping to the present, I'm very proud to say that I still work with it (12 years in this career!).

The life of a biologist in college is reduced to studying hard, making many field trips, publishing works, and participating in congresses and seminars. On the first international trip of my life, I was going to Argentina to participate in a congress of specialists in Aquatic Mammals from South America, presenting some of my research at the time on the behavior of southern right whales.

me presenting my work at the congress.jpeg

That's me presenting my work at the congress.

The congress was held at Península Valdés, South America's largest southern right whale nursery. I couldn't take my first international trip to an icy paradise full of whales and not have a decent camera. I gathered my small fortune and bought my first DSLR camera to record the trip. I learned to photograph by reading the camera manual, reading tutorials online, making mistakes, and getting it right in practice. The fact is that I returned from the trip with lovely records, with a lot of marine life and nature. That's how I became a nature photographer.

How I Became a Surfer (and Consequently, a Surf Photographer)

One day, passing through Praia da Barra in RJ, I saw a surf school and decided to learn to surf. I thought, "well, I like the beach and the sea; it must be nice". And a "plus" is that I was always afraid of waves, so I said, "why not?". I contacted the school, and there I was there getting my first little waves the following weekend.

me surfing.jpeg

Learning to surf.

Simple as that, that's how I became a surfer. Like (almost) every good surfer, during my first few months learning to surf and being wiped out in so many waves, I suffered a sprained ankle, had bursitis in one of my shoulders, and started complaining of pain in my knees because of a condition I was already developing at the time but did not know. All this together left me soaking for almost 2 months doing physical therapy - that is, without surfing.

I, who couldn't stay home, kept going to the beach almost every weekend to accompany my boyfriend (now my husband) to his surf lessons. So I started taking my camera and taking pictures of students surfing. No, that's not (yet) how I became a surf photographer; that time as a photographer didn't last long, enough for me to recover and go back to surfing.

In just under two years after I started surfing, my husband was called to work in California, in San Francisco. We packed our bags, and off we went! But according to my visa, I was prevented from working. Having nothing to do, I started looking for things to occupy my time.

my husband and i in sf.jpeg

My husband and I in San Francisco

I found a project called City Surf Project, which takes vulnerable children and young students from SF to learn to surf, in addition to promoting contact with nature and having a healthier life. I got in touch and volunteered to take pictures of the kids during the surf sessions. It was amazing to see the happiness on their faces, all happy catching their waves :)

And what few know is that SF breathes surf. It may not be California's most famous surfing destination, but it does have its place in the sport. The scenery is incredible, with those icy waters of the Pacific and dark green, sometimes very scary waves that keep coming! I found myself in a cold paradise with gnarly waves. My fear of facing the surf in that unknown place was still a big deal to me, so I would go to Ocean Beach to take pictures of the people surfing. I went to the beach to take pictures two or three times a week and that's how I started to consider myself a surf photographer.

Over time I even made a friend that took me surfing a few times. He lend me one of his boards :). Thank you, Kevin!

How I Became a Content Creator

After a year and a half in SF, I saw an announcement from an all-female Brazilian surf shop, Langai, which was looking for women who wanted to share their surfing knowledge and stories to inspire other women to jump into the surfing world as well. That's when Langai's Blog came out, and I joined it as one of the blog's contributors, writing regularly on different subjects. You can read some of my contents here.

langai's blog.JPG

In my downtime in SF, I became a little more concerned about my daily habits and how they harmed the environment. I dedicated myself to researching and studying the subject and adopting more sustainable practices, such as avoiding single-use plastics, buying bulk, separating my trash, etc. I started talking about it on social media, sharing everything I learned in an attempt to inspire people to change their habits too. On this journey, Causa Limpa, a Brazilian company that sells sustainable products, found me and invited me to be a brand ambassador, producing content for their social networks.

Still, in SF, Langai's Blog took me to Surfguru (network is everything, one contact leads to another, and life is beautiful)the largest wave, wind and tide forecast site in Brazil. I joined Surfguru to produce and curate exclusive content for the website. Today we have a team of around 15-20 people (biologists, oceanographers, surfers, physical educators, surf teachers, swimmers, everyone who has some connection with the sea) who produce exclusive and quality content for the website every month, about surfing, forecasting, sustainability and more.

And that's how I became a content creator. I never thought I would write so many texts out there, and I would continue to do so today. So wonderful to be able to share my knowledge, inspire people and care for the planet at the same time.

How I Became a Community Builder (Still in Process)

After three years in California, with the visa expiring and missing Brazil, my husband and I returned to our dear country. We had a fantastic time there, but nothing like coming home, right?

That's when I received an unexpected proposal full of uncertainties (and doubts, lots of doubts). @luizhadad, partner and advisor at Surfguru, and my work partner, invited me to do the same work I was doing at Surfguru, also at Cambiatus (@cambiatus2022).

cambiatus platform english.jpg

After a lot of brainstorming and studying blockchain, crypto, smart contracts, web3, DAOs (phew!), social currencies, and Cambiatus communities, I started writing about and telling the stories of Cambiatus communities. Knowing and understanding Cambiatus' processes was a great challenge (and still is) for me. I keep learning and maturing in this web3 world.

Over time and with more knowledge about these subjects, we've reached the time to make this connection between Surfguru and web3, using Cambiatus. That's where the @surflimpo project was born, started by Surfguru and Route Brasil, and that's when we created DROP, our social currency that encourages and rewards participation in beach cleaning and ocean care activities.

I, along with @luizhadad (and @lcalixxto, who was with us from the beginning) and a few other people from the Route Brasil team, dedicated ourselves for approximately three months to build and define what the @surflimpo community and project were, and to co-design the DROP social currency. And that's how I became a community builder (I'd be bragging too much to say I'm a community builder, but I'm taking my first steps in that direction!).

And today, what am I? How did I end up on Hive? What am I doing here?

I know the post was long, but I don't know how to talk about myself in a few words. I'm still a biologist, nature and surf photographer, surfer, content creator, and community builder, BUT not necessarily in that order. I can be a little bit of everything and, even better, share everything I know with many other people.

The idea to join Hive came from @luizhadad in an attempt to bring Surfguru and @surflimpo even closer to the web3 world. By the way, thank you so much, @luizhadad, for making me onboard here at Hive and inviting me to join this community.

I intend to share a lot about surfing, photos, travel, biology, nature, communities, sustainability, and anything else you want to know!

Ahh, I also have two cats, so every now and then, they'll show up around here :D

Português - BR [🇧🇷]

Quem sou eu? 👩

Fala galera!

me and my camera.jpeg

Vivi a minha infância e adolescência inteira morando no interior do estado do Espírito Santo (Brazil), um pouco longe do mar.

Apresentando o meu trabalho no congresso.

me surfing.jpeg

Aprendendo a surfar.

Arrumamos as malas e fomos!

my husband and i in sf.jpeg

Ele me emprestava a prancha dele. Obrigada Kevin!

cambiatus platform english.jpg

O que eu to fazendo aqui?

Thank you so very much for all these tips and suggestions. They are very rich and I’m sure I’m gonna learn a lot with them all. I’m doing my post now but I’ve been wandering in Hive for a month before posting something here.

I’ve already joined some discord servers and I’m watching everything closely. I’m still amazed by so many opportunities here , like it is infinite haha

But I’m learning with the process. It’s being great!! Thank you again for this warm welcome. Se ya!
