Book review. On Photography by Susan Sontag

(Edited)

This book by Susan Sontag called On Photography was a difficult yet very satisfying reading. Why do we take images, can photography be considered art? How about the etical issues when it comes to capturing/ showing images which are emotionally disturbing?

This is a philosophical approach to photography. Susan takes us from the beginning of time, when the cult of images hasn't even started and takes us to the present. The book is a collection of essays and it is very well documented, including a lot of history, art and historical references. She talks about some of the legends of photography, from Ansel Adams to Stieglitz, Westman, Diane Airbus to name a few.

We now live in what Susan calls a "fotobulimic" society. We devour images and we can't get enough. I think it's disturbing to watch how people put on so many false masks to pretend they are something they're not. Now people take pictures for the likes, the follows, excluding the emotional charge from the process. I think of people like Lewis Hine who made a change in the world by taking pictures of the kids working in factories. He revealed a harsh side of reality which had to be seen. That is one of the biggest qualities of photography: to spark an emotion inside of you, changing the way you see reality.

I have made a long almost 2 hours review of this book that you can watch here

Have a gorgeous day and toodle loo!

My father always had the assertion that photography had pushed art to become more abstract. It is interesting to hear that he was a man before his time. He used to make his own cameras and thought me all of the processes of developing my own pictures.
For me, photography is a tool and as with all tools it can be used to create good and bad, art and craft. But it is interesting to see the way it has changed peoples perception of reality. The frame can be filled with truth or lies.

Hey! It seems that your father was quite a visionary, that's very nice! I agree that the camera is just a tool, the hands and the mind behind it are the most important. Deception and lying are common in any medium, including in this one as well. Checking multiple sources and doing a bit of research before taking anything as "true" would definetely help nowadays.

What I find unfortunate is the way people hide themselves behind the photoshoped images, cool surroundings aka vacations, expensive cars and bikes, just to run from their own sadness. Photography used as an antisadness pill. It makes more damage than good because it doesn't heal, it just hides.

Thank you for reading!

I must admit that it takes a lot watch anyone's video but and if it longer than 5 minutes then you have to muster up all the courage to watch it all but when its from you, I enjoy it a lot.
