Between Letters and Footprints of the Past: A Journey to the House of Peruvian Literature (ENG/SPAN)

Today, I want to share a series of photos I took two years ago during my visit to Lima, Peru. These photos depict the House of Peruvian Literature, a place filled with history, culture, and literary art. Photography has this magic of capturing moments and places that leave a mark on us, and this series perfectly encapsulates the essence of this special site.

The House of Peruvian Literature is located near the Plaza Mayor, in the heart of downtown Lima. This building has a fascinating history. Originally, it was the Desamparados Station, inaugurated in 1912 as part of Lima’s railway network. It served as an important transportation hub, connecting the city with other parts of the country, particularly the Andes. In 1999, the Peruvian government decided to transform it into a space dedicated to literature, and today it stands as a testament to Peru’s rich literary tradition.

The photos I took that day mainly capture the imposing facade of the building, which still retains its original features. The Doric columns, the grandeur of its doors, and the towering dome with a clock that marks the passage of time are details that left me in awe. To me, the building is more than just a structure of stone: it’s a symbol of history that still lives in the present.

One of my favorite photos is the one where I captured the main entrance of the building. The door, framed by large columns, has something magical: a light contrast that turns it into a gateway between two worlds. Looking at it, you can feel as if you are crossing from the old Lima, represented by its architecture, to the literary Lima of today, full of the voices of authors such as César Vallejo, Mario Vargas Llosa, and José María Arguedas. It’s as if walking through that door not only takes you inside the building but also on a journey through time, from ancient Lima to the present literary Lima.

Inside the House of Peruvian Literature, I managed to capture several images showing the contrast between the light coming through the windows and the atmosphere of the hallways. I love how shadows play on the walls, creating a sense of transition, as if every step taken in that space brings us closer to the knowledge and culture of Peru.

The photos of the stairs, the columns, and the architectural details also fascinate me, as they reflect the uniqueness of the place. It’s a place that is not only interesting for what it holds inside but also for the history it preserves in its walls. Every corner seems to tell a story, and the photos help capture those fleeting moments that we often don’t notice at first glance.

I remember feeling deeply connected to the place that day. Lima, with all its history, showed me a side I had never known, and the House of Peruvian Literature became a reflection of Peru’s cultural identity, a city that knows how to balance its rich tradition with its modernity. It was an unforgettable experience that I hope to share with you through these images.

Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una serie de fotos que tomé hace dos años durante mi visita a Lima, Perú. En ellas se retrata la Casa de la Literatura Peruana, un lugar lleno de historia, cultura y arte literario. La fotografía tiene esa magia de congelar momentos y lugares que nos marcan, y esta serie captura perfectamente la esencia de este sitio tan especial.

La Casa de la Literatura Peruana está ubicada cerca de la Plaza Mayor, en el corazón del centro histórico de Lima. Este edificio tiene una historia impresionante. Originalmente, fue la Estación de Desamparados, inaugurada en 1912 como parte de la red ferroviaria de Lima. Fue un importante centro de transporte para conectar la ciudad con otras partes del país, especialmente con los Andes. En 1999, el gobierno peruano decidió transformarlo en un espacio dedicado a la literatura, y hoy se erige como un testimonio de la rica tradición literaria peruana.

Las fotos que tomé ese día retratan principalmente la imponente fachada del edificio, que aún conserva sus características originales. Las columnas dóricas, la majestuosidad de sus puertas, y la imponente cúpula con un reloj que marca el paso del tiempo, son detalles que me dejaron impresionado. Para mí, el edificio es mucho más que una estructura de piedra: es un símbolo de la historia que sigue viva en el presente.

Una de las fotos que más me gusta es aquella en la que capturé la entrada principal del edificio. La puerta, enmarcada por columnas de gran tamaño, tiene algo mágico: un contraste de luz que la convierte en un portal hacia dos mundos. Al mirarla, uno puede sentir que se está cruzando entre el pasado de Lima, representado por su arquitectura, y el presente literario. Es como si atravesar esa puerta no solo te llevara dentro del edificio, sino también a un viaje en el tiempo, desde la Lima antigua hasta la Lima literaria de hoy.

Dentro de la Casa de la Literatura, logré capturar varias imágenes que muestran el contraste entre la luz que entra por las ventanas y la atmósfera de los pasillos. Me encanta cómo las sombras juegan en las paredes, creando una sensación de transición, como si cada paso dado en ese espacio nos llevara más cerca del conocimiento y la cultura del Perú.

Las fotos de las escaleras, las columnas y los detalles arquitectónicos también me fascinan, ya que reflejan la peculiaridad del lugar. Es un sitio que no solo es interesante por lo que alberga dentro, sino también por la historia que se conserva en sus paredes. Cada rincón parece contar una historia, y las fotos permiten captar esos momentos fugaces que no siempre somos conscientes de ver a simple vista.

Recuerdo que ese día me sentí profundamente conectado con el lugar. Lima, con toda su historia, me mostró una faceta que nunca había conocido, y la Casa de la Literatura se convirtió en un reflejo de la identidad cultural peruana, una ciudad que sabe cómo equilibrar su rica tradición con su modernidad. Fue una experiencia inolvidable que espero compartir con ustedes a través de estas imágenes.
