No wild, all wild

"I don't believe in the wild," says the biologist on the podcast. Such a dichotomy doesn't exist, she explains. What humans do is just as much a part of nature as the nature that humans do less in.

I like how she thinks. I like feeling included. I like that I am a part of nature whether I'm summiting a mountain on the Olympic Peninsula or sprawled out in my underwear on my computer in front of my air conditioner.

All that which humans make, which humans take... Maybe we make and take too much, but it all comes from this wild/not wild place we call home.

One day we will be done making and taking. One day we will be gone, and the earth will reclaim all that we have made.

All of which was hers to begin with.

This reminds me of an essay I was reading about weeds recently. Weeds have become a bit more popular in recent decades (I am familiar with the ones in my yard and which are edible, etc.) and some people feel they shouldn't remove them from their gardens, as it is undoing some of that nature goodness. The essay argues that weeds grow in human disturbed areas, which is quite true - how many forest floors have you seen covered in dollarweed and betony popping up all over the place? No human disturbed land = no awesome opportunity for weeds. Also, it argues that most of the weeds we think of as natural were accidental imports from Europe.

So anyway, off topic, but the next time you are contemplating nature and see a dollarweed's little green face peeking up at you, there is some food for thought :)

I disappeared! But I came back a week later.

Weeds certainly hold the dirt down when we humans expose it. Keep down the dust.
I don't mind weeds, but I'm not a gardener. Do they really kick out/stifle other plants? I was always under the impression that they could live harmoniously, but that they were aesthetically displeasing.

Our forest floors are covered in moss! But humans "don't like" moss on their rooftops or steps.

On one hand, humans can be destructive assholes. On the other hand, as far as I know, we aren't space aliens or otherwise out of place on this planet. Well, aside from the Christian concept that, "This world is not my home, I'm only passing through." I think it is possible to be good stewards of nature without abandoning technology or society.

I see you're trying a new watermark. Are you still trying out different ideas?

I think so, too. It's just a matter of whether or not everyone gets on board with it in a timely manner.

This is the watermark I use when I'm not being the crow lady. I like having different "signatures" for different moods. :)
