A Wednesday Walk I Stumbled Upon

Hello everybody it's great to be posting on the first Wednesday of the new year. It's time and it has been awhile since I have posted in #WednesdayWalk hosted by @tattoodjay glad to be here again. As the title states, I wasn't planning on a walk but it happened.

I got off work early yesterday and on the drive home I thought of hitting up a park close to the river here. Now I haven't been to this place so I didn't know what to expect. My intentions were to capture some river photos and finish up an article that I have already published.

Now I quickly found out this park is tiny. There really wasn't much to it. That is evident because these few photos summarize it. The park had three metal benches and three metal tables. There was a bricked oval shaped area on top off a small hill. The metal tubes I think was some make shift art. For play to hang on? No I don't think so as they were close to 10 feet off the ground. Maybe in hindsight for a family of Bigfoots, hehe. There was some information boards about other parks off the river and some history of the river. The bad thing is it was too faded, contained many scratches and some vandals decided to graffiti them.

IMG_20240102_162646594.jpg

The slight rise in elevation did offer some river views. Not shoreline views but some looking down on it. My next course of action was to walk near the edge of road to see if there were any better areas to capture some more. I get there and notice there is a nature trail below. Now this park doesn't have an entrance to it. I decided to track down a hill about 50 feet below through some waste high brush.

Here I am I made the track down unscratched. The weather today is close to 32 degrees F (0 degrees C) and there is a bit of a breeze. As you can see in the picture I'm wearing a sweatshirt. I'm also wearing jeans and a pair of sneakers. I wasn't freezing though there were times when I could see my breath. A few times my hands got a little cold. The more I walked and the faster I went the more warm I was. It was only somewhat cold to me when I stopped to take pictures.

The make up of the trail floor was dirt. Many times it was completely covered in leaves which I didn't mind because some of the dirt was muddy. Some paths were partially covered and I tried to walk on the leaves as much as possible.

IMG_20240102_161457846.jpg

It wasn't muddy everywhere but after walking awhile I accumulated some mud on my shoes. Every so often the trail had placed stones in it. Were these put here on purpose for a would be trail walker to clean his shoes off? Well I definitely made use of it, haha. I did this on three occasions as I probably walked here for over an hour.

The forest hides many things. The snow here is pretty much gone since it last snowed the day after Christmas. So it is nice to see some of it. It was cool to see a split open stump containing snow along with a good amount of leaves. I was amazed that some trees are still fighting to hold onto their leaves, something that doesn't happen in January. The thing that caught my eye the most is the green grass. How the heck is this still around? Usually that disappears in the middle of fall. My yard is all brown, maybe I need to find out what kind of grass this is, haha. Hey I fight a lot in the spring to get my yard green.

IMG_20240102_155911551.jpg

Oh deer, animal tracks I'm not alone in this forest. I seen many animal tracks but most of them were deer. When I first got on the trail I seen some raccoon tracks and also smelt a skunk nearby. This kind of put my senses on alert because I didn't want to be a victim of unpleasant juices. There were some bird chirping, crunches of branches in the distance and sounds made that were unfamiliar to me. I did not see a single living thing though surprisingly.

IMG_20240102_160830922.jpg

IMG_20240102_161723111.jpg

There were so many downed trees on the forest floor. Also some trees were laying on each other both naturally and on purpose. I'm not quite sure when this trail was made but you can see many clean cuts marks on a lot of the tree trunks.

IMG_20240102_155748500.jpg

The forest hid the river well even though it was very near to it. As I passed through one area the trees couldn't hide it no more. I could now see it through the braches of standing trees. Some views were more clear than others. Than all of sudden I found an opening in the forest where I could take a picture of the river with a great view. The bridge is the Veterans Memorial bridge that connects Nebraska to Iowa. Seeing this view I realized I was well beyond a mile from where I started on the trail. Time to get back before the sun sets and it is dark. A dark forest is no place to be!

It was a very good trail to walk. There were lots of bends and plenty of uphill climbing. I had the forest all to myself except for the hiding wild life. A little muddy at places and yes I'm not wearing those sneakers today. They will have a date with a scrub brush very soon.

I hope you enjoyed the walk that wasn't planned. A little chill in the air but that didn't stop me from getting some steps in. I guess at some point I will come back and experience the whole trail. Perhaps when the trail is completely dried out.

Take care, stay safe and enjoy the rest of the week. Until next time.

that'a an odd looking forest especialy when you said you never saw another would during your walk. Glad you did not freeze with that zero degree celsius temp outside. Keep safe

Probably didn't see anybody because of the cold, not exactly walking temps to be on a trail. I was curious so I walked it. I'm use to these temps and actually it warm for this time of year. If it would have been 10 degrees colder I would have not walked with what I was wearing...

I wish I had a forest like that near home, I think it's beautiful to take a walk around there, the trees without their leaves are a spectacular view, I like them, but I really loved the remaining snow on the dirt, you see, I have never seen snow, so thanks for sharing 👍🏻😊

Thanks for dropping by. I'm glad I shared something you haven't seen, snow. It will probably be soon that I will share lots of it when it decides to really snow a lot.

Too mamy trees without leaves in forest and the river at a glance. That shows the weather impact and the snow in trails gives a lovely colour combination. Hope you enjoyed your walk.

It was strange to go for a walk in January here outside. Usually it's way colder. It was good walk and peaceful being alone 😊

It's really good to enjoy these walks, in your case a winter walk where you can enjoy all for yourself as you say, I like that feeling... but there were animals, so more exciting to think you can find some... !LOLZ

Haha I thought I would at least see a deer. I was scanning everywhere looking. The weather was just at the point where it didn't bother me. A little colder I don't think I would have walked. That was my first January longer walk outside ever. Usually much colder here this time of year.

(Edited)

I can imagine this will be the last winter walk outside for me this year. Today temps in the the 20's with a nagging wind wouldn't do today lol

Hope you have great year ahead and wishing health stays on your side.

Thanks so much
Funny thing is last year I focused on healthy eating more exercise and was feeling the best I have for years and for that matter i still do and do not regret it and will do the same this year
but alas me and my brother have had issues with lots of polyps on our 6 monthly colonoscopies and we did the genetic test and have a gene giving us a very high chance of devoloping colon cancer like in the 98% range, so he feels 6 monthly colonoscopies are not ging to be enough to kep up, so I have to have most of my colon removed, not looking forward to it but its for the best, just need and hope my arteries near my heart are clear the Surgeon wanted a clearance from a cardiologist first and since Have had blockages in my legs she has me doing a stress test in two weeks before she will clear me,

but either way its all for the good and staying positive

Sorry for waffling on about this I just had to get it out LOL

No problem I understand. The colon thing I have putting it off and I will get one this year. The Doc has been hounding me since I was 45. Now 50, I was a little put off by it initially but a lot had to do with the referral I got, a doctor named Dr. Ferry 🤣😂🤣 Im sure you have had many and I got to step foward on the first one, haha.

Hoping you pass all those pre checks and get done what you have to and come out better than before 🙏 Keep staying positive 👍

I will be honest I put mine off way more than I should have was 62 when I got my first one, and then have had three since every 6 months, and realize how lucky I have been, the Dr basically said it is amazing luck for both me and my brother who did the same, statistically is almost 99.99% odds one of us would have had cancer and we are so lucky that neither of us have had it, and all our kids and grandkids are recommended to start having them at 18

yes thats my hope since I know I need the surgery I just want it done and over with, if I have blockages affecting my heart the cardiologist said I need those cleared first, a similar rocedure to when I had my legs done, so not worried about that but concerned if that happens that my surgery will be delayed a year

Oh I didn't realize colon cancer was hereditary and could prompt our kids and grand kids to be checked at such an early age. Well I hope you don't have any blockages of your heart and get this surgery done and over with. I know that will give you a lot of peace of mind.

It's nice to walk in a quite place like that except for the birds chirping, but knowing that there are wild life around would scare me, especially that you are alone.

It was relaxing despite the little chill in the air. Not to bad with the wildlife it was day light, at night or dusk it would have been a little eary
