Watch This!

Did you know Louisville has Block Watch neighborhoods? Me neither. Unless you count the nosy neighbor next door, but she can't watch the whole block no matter how hard she tries. For as long as I can remember, I've been seeing these signs, but I've yet to see sign of anybody actually watching. Was harboring a sneaking suspicion that they didn't actually exist up until Trayvon Martin's murder.

Felt like switching things up a bit recently, put the trusty old 70-300mm on the Nikon and went wandering. Needed some woods in my life and headed for the park to hike some trails. In a nutshell, that was a bad idea. Didn't get very far down the first trail before it became apparent that this year is shaping up to be a banner year for poison ivy.

Quickly got me itching to switch to some paved pathways, which was where I met Joe here with his electric skateboard. We chatted at the overlook a bit and confirmed that in Louisville it isn't six degrees of separation so much a one or two degrees. Biggest damn small town I ever did see.

Was taking photos of flowers on a blackberry briar when I heard one of my favorite exclamations, "Take my picture!" Have been slowly collecting 'street portraits,' photos of folks who stop me on my wanders and ask to have their photo taken, and after a bit of a drought, one found me on the steps leading to the overlook.

It's a bit of a role reversal for street photography, they find me rather than the other way round, but it's been quite interesting just to see who wants to be documented. Took a couple photos of this couple to make sure there was at least one I liked, but now can't decide between them. Which of the two do you prefer?

Life in the surveillance state of nature is nasty, voyeuristic, and expensive. Now if only Mother Nature could reclaim the Flock cameras. . .
