The Times They Are A Changin'

When I joined this blockchain more than eight years ago, it was with the intent of sharing my (primarily nature) photography. Then 2020 and the Breonna Taylor protests happened and altered my trajectory into a crash course in journalism. In the years since, it has become painfully obvious that HIVE isn't the ideal platform for the sort of local news that I spend much of my time covering.

It's not even HIVE's fault really, more a case of trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. One of the things I love about this platform is the range of humanity on display here, how the overwhelming majority of folks I interact with, follow, or have following me are from places that aren't abbreviated USA. Unfortunately, that means that much of what I post isn't particularly relevant for most people.

C'est la vie. That's a me problem more than a HIVE problem. Which is why I created a Substack yesterday. Seemed fitting somehow, the AP (Associated Press) announced yesterday that they were pivoting away from newspaper journalism and offered buyouts to their US based journalists. Legacy media is dying and the future of journalism is still being born.

It's well past time to build something new, something that doesn't exist solely to serve the ends of them that own the outlets. Still working up my introductory post, will post a link once there's something to see at The Poreman's Journal. And yes autocorrect, that spelling is intentional, an homage to the monthly newspaper my grandfather used to put out.

All of this is not to say I'm leaving HIVE, quite the opposite in fact. With a new home for the journalistic stuff, I can finally get back to posting for fun instead of worrying about needing to get information out. Will still be some of that I'm sure, just a more curated selection. The ranting is here to stay, though.

Should make for a nice change of pace. Speaking of which, these photos are all from Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill, here in central Kentucky, where my partner and I like to go when we need a change of pace. Any of y'all have any experience with Substack?
