Thankful

What are you thankful for? One thing that I am thankful for is community. You can define community many ways, for me it is that sense of connectedness, of coming together to care for and look after one another. It's what makes the bad times bearable and the good times better.

Yesterday, hundreds of folks come out in Beechmont for a bit of community and a tasty Thanksgiving meal.

The vendors were closed but the doors were open at The StrEatery, a food hall on Woodlawn Ave in the Beechmont neighborhood, for the Thanksgiving Community Dinner, a free Thanksgiving meal for anyone with an appetite.

Started as a way to give back to the community, this made the fourth year that volunteers had spent the day before Thanksgiving cooking and serving up a meal.

Each year has seen more and more people coming through the door, this year they were hoping to serve 400 people.

With the leftovers being donated to the shelters in town for their holiday meal, that goal was going to be reached one way or another.

Seeing all this just made me doubly thankful that there are folks like this in my neighborhood.

Think that's what makes for a happy thanksgiving.

We don't celebrate Thanksgiving in my country, but I can see the good side of it. I like how you captured the importance of the event. Nice work @coloneljethro!

I have no use for the creative reimagining of history that is the narrative we were taught about the holiday, or the orgy of consumption and excess that comes with it, but the idea of being thankful and giving thanks is something we could probably all do with more of. It was quite heartening for me to discover that something like this was going on in the community. Thank you :)
