Ramble Round Town #2

Rain finally let up long enough to go shooting yesterday, so I headed for the Highlands of Louisville. The Highlands aren't particularly high, although the same cannot be said for the inhabitants. Headed there to go shooting because there'd been a shooting at the restaurant pictured above this past weekend and I wanted a shot. The person that got shot died, and now the city is trying to kill the place's liquor license.

High times in the Highlands. It's one of the more walkable areas in this city of sprawl, which makes it one of the better places here for street photography. Lots of bars, restaurants, head shops and stores, with plenty of people out and about.

The area is known both for the old money that calls it home as well as the hippies, hipsters, rednecks, and working class folks that give it it's distinct character. The constant tension between the two groups just keeps it interesting.

Resting bitch face? Check. Camouflage? Check. Some people like to dress for success but I prefer to dress for hostility, particularly when doing street photography. Plus it's an easy way to get people to underestimate you, and that'll get you a lot more leeway and freedom of action.

It does have the minor side effect of making some people uncomfortable. Then again, that effect is exactly what I'm going for sometimes. In case you're not familiar with them, those are Jehovah's Witnesses in the photo above. Where I grew up it was something of a sport to run them off at gunpoint when they came banging on your door. Here in the city they don't really do much door knocking, tend to lurk on the sidewalk instead. Hadn't every really noticed them until I spotted a setup like this across the street from the mass shooting last year. Ever since I've been spotting them all over the place.

Louisville is currently in the grip of a fad we've taken to calling getting #Magbarred. Basically this consists of taking a vehicle and driving it into whatever building strikes your fancy. Roots here fell victim to a magbarring a few weeks back and since my bestie used to work here and hated it I couldn't help but indulge in a little schadenfreude. Still not sure how they managed it but manage they did, got the car all the way into the building and then some.

Kept being reminded of a recent conversation with @xrayman about people and their phones while I was wondering. Seemed like I could find someone on their phone no matter which way I pointed the camera, so from now on I'm going to make a point of documenting this.

Here in Kentucky the Grand Old Party has decided that what we really need is for kids to be able to work more, currently trying to change the law so they can work the graveyard shift. Fortunately for the kid working here, this Valvoline isn't open that late. How old were you when you learned how to change the oil in a vehicle?

Probably a little older than that, that kid doesn't seem too keen on the whole job thing.
