Community, Market
It's after one in the morning and I should be in bed, but there's thirteen cats gallivanting about and they keep distracting me from sleep. At least I've been told there's thirteen, they're never all still and visible long enough to count them. Might as well write a blog if I can keep them from chewing on the power cables.
Thankfully, they're not my cats. Visiting a friend presently, which makes the kitties cuter in the way that only a 'someone else's problem' can be. Paid a visit to Iroquois Park yesterday to check in on the community market and they were carrying on about as good as the cats. Just less zoomies.
Was hotter than hell but the market still had a good turnout, although all the vendors seemed to have a fan attached to them.
Spotted a bunch of police cruisers and people around the basketball court beside the market and had to investigate. Turns out LMPD was having some sort of 'Stop the violence' cornhole tournament and had to snap a few shots.
Not sure if it was connected to the community market or just happened to be going on beside it, but it made for a nice bonus. Even ran into someone I know from the protests competing in the tournament.
If you crossed a farmer's market with an art fair you'd be close to something akin to the community market. Fresh fruit, veggies, and baked goods like one would expect but also handmade crafts, a book truck, and even plants.
Hot dogs too! With my repeat visits, I've started to get to know some of the vendors, going to have to do something more in-depth on the folks here. Growing up in a rural area, my notions of the city mostly came from Sesame Street, thought a city was a place where you could just walk down the street and get the things you need. It's been refreshing to finally be able to do that and meet my neighbors in the process.
Now if only we can plant this idea more widely. . .
I love such markets. This is so colorful.
We have several where I live. One closest to me is organized on the third Friday of each month. Each market is organized on a different weekend or Friday so you always have one to visit.
They're so much fun. This one sometimes has live music even.
Do the ones near you run year round or just in the warmer months? This one is every weekend, but only during the summer.
The ones we have here are running year round, so rain or shine, we always have a market each month and only the local vendors are allowed. There are other markets during summer, where everyone is allowed, regardless of their location, but they select the vendors carefully, meaning they only allow one vendor with a certain type of products, you won't find two selling the same product.
Thank ya!
