Predawn in Hoquiam
Hoquiam, Wash. Predawn in Dog Marsh, on the Grays Harbor bay.
In the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
The mountain was out, as they say around here. Mount Rainier, which can only be seen on occasion, when the sky is clear enough, or the sun is providing a backlight.
I've seen Rainier disappear, on a cloudless day, as the sun reaches midmorning.
January is part of our rainy season. So there's water pooling in the marsh, providing a new feature to this landscape that I more often photograph in the warm, dry season.
The grain silos and elevator at the Port of Grays Harbor made a nice silhouette that morning. There's a ship loading up in the shadows there.
In the early 20th century, a wooden dock ringed the shore here, used to load timber onto ships. Only a few dock pilings remain.
A mist hugged the copse on Rennie Island...
...as the sun broke from the clouds.
In the west, the moon clung to night.
There is a pathway to the moon, though at the end, you still can't reach it.
As the light grew, I was drawn inward to Dog Marsh, to discover...
...the Puget Sound & Pacific Railroad swing bridge, over the Hoquiam River...
...and a tiny peninsula, pointing out Beacon Hill in Hoquiam.
Mount Rainier was fading (like my camera battery, which died after this pic).
See ya next time!
Nice photos, as usual. I visited relatives in the Seattle area about ten years ago, and noticed Mt. Rainier almost always had a few clouds hanging around it.
Thank you. I've never seen it with clouds, probably we're too far away to notice them.
