Golden Hour on the Grays Harbor Bay

As golden hour approached the outskirts of Hoquiam, in Washington state...

...the wind kicked up some unusually large waves on the Grays Harbor bay.

I came across a large piece of driftwood balanced on the riprap...

...and explored some of its nooks and crannies.

The wind played ferociously with this dried seaweed.

The light on the rocks drew my attention away from the driftwood.

Around the shoreline, in a small tidal inlet, some ducks were foraging.

A flock of geese flew over.

And some trumpeter swans honked by.

Everything had a warm glow as the sun set, and it was a bit warmer there, as the ravine of the inlet blocked the wind.

Heading back, over the railroad tracks to the first block of town after the wild outskirts, I caught the last of the light on the Saron Lutheran church steeple.

What beautiful scenery and the way you tell it, it looks like stills from a Discovey Channel documentary.

Thank you. I should watch the Discovery Channel; then maybe I'd have a few more ideas about the content to accompany my photos.

Some really awesome photographs of some stunning scenery. I love the driftwood. I have a weird obsession with finding driftwood and taking photographs of it from weird angles. I would have done the same as you by exploring it. Keep well!

Thanks! I love the driftwood too. I never ran across it much, until I moved out here to the coast. Where do you find it?

Pleasure is all mine.

I live along the coast, so here are various driftwood and dead timber of the local fynbos that gets weathered in a similar way to driftwood. And I walk along the coastline where my parents have a house that actually gets real driftwood!

I hope you find some as well, they are spectacular.

I haven't been reading on Hive as faithfully as I used to, so just now found these delightful photos. Driftwood is definitely interesting. I like the last photo with the church and the green lawn. It looks like a place I'd like to visit.

I see you haven't posted much recently. Hope all is well!

Hi, yes, all is well. Thanks for asking. I have a new job on graveyard shift, and adjusting to the new sleep schedule has slowed the creativity. And the weather is not great for taking photo walks.

The church is a nice place to visit. There is a little courtyard in the front, with a fountain, that's hidden from the street yet provides a view of it. Somehow that little spot reminds me of the Southwest or California, even though I only know those areas from movies and TV. I don't know what calls those regions to mind exactly; some combination of the architecture and the fountain.

How are you? I hope you aren't giving up on Hive!

I still post now and then, and try to read a few posts every few days, but I've been busy with other pursuits, like reading books and watching my grandchildren.

Hello!

Lovely post and footage... why so quiet since this one?

I suspect there's a story there 👣

Ah, yes, there is a story (or an excuse, take your pick). I started a overnight job in November, and it has taken awhile to adjust to being awake enough, in the middle of the night, to be creative. I have a couple posts in the works though. Thanks for checking this out. I'm looking forward to reading more of your work too.

Cool. That sounds interesting!

I once imagined working the night shift and writing while the world slept.

I thought reality would be far tougher. It must be.

I look forward to getting to know you better as well.

Intrigued to hear more
