A Christmas Walk

In December, I took a quick walk down to the Levee Street boat launch and moorage floats in Hoquiam, Wash., just as dawn was breaking.

Often in our Pacific Northwest winter, we get only a peek of sun for the entire day, at dawn or dusk, through a crack on the horizon beneath a ceiling of clouds. I didn't want to miss it.

The sky was just turning colors behind Simpson Avenue Bridge when I arrived.

I walked out to the farthest point on the moorage floats, where the Hustler was tied up...

...to get the best view of the bridge and the water.

Upriver, Riverside Bridge glowed briefly.

There were Christmas lights (and Christmas trees) in the water.

And Christmas colors on the bank.

I did not see 'nine ladies dancing', but I did catch some whales at it.

I packed up to leave with a surprising promise of blue skies ahead.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Wow, there is no snow on the ground! Is that typical for your area?

Oh, yeah. We rarely see snow. So far no snow cover this year, just a few flakes in the air at one point. Some years we don't get any.

I checked the map, and I see you are about an hour away from Lacey, where my sister lived for about 5 years. She went there for the temperate climate, but the gray days that came with the milder climate were too depressing so she moved to southern Idaho. I never did get over to Lacey to visit her; Covid interrupted it, and later I had other things going on.

It's a beautiful place, but the grey days do take some getting used to. The last couple winters we've been lucky to have more sun than normal, though; yesterday at around noon it was sunny and nearly 50 degrees. Not bad for January.

Hi @cliffagreen

You have some very good images there, the open plans show a reality that mixes the urban and the natural landscape.
