A Birthday in the ICU: Between Guardian and Protected

Hello, Hive community! Tomorrow is my birthday, but instead of candles, balloons, and a party with friends, I will be here, within the walls of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with the constant beeping of monitors, rows of medication vials, and patients fighting for every breath. I'm on call all day, and my shift will accompany me until the dawn of my special day. There is no escape, but in the midst of this harsh reality, I find a profound beauty and a life lesson that only the front lines of medicine can offer.
Here are some photos I took during my rounds. This endless ICU hallway, with its brown marble walls and railings supporting weary bodies, is my daily setting. In the background, the door to the "Solutions Room" where we prepare the infusions that save lives. The floor shines in the sunlight, reflecting the exhaustion of endless shifts.

Here, a colleague attends to a patient in the ICU, surrounded by monitors that tirelessly watch over vital signs. This is exactly how I spend my hours: adjusting ventilators, administering drugs, and offering words of encouragement to families who wait with their hearts in their hands.

And these vials of rocuronium bromide on the windowsill, under the yellowish light, are part of my routine. They represent the thin line between life and death that we walk every day.

Trees invade the corridors, reminding me that life always finds a way to grow, even in the harshest places.

Tomorrow, as I mark another year of life here, I will have no cake or noisy toasts. Perhaps, at the end of my shift, I will imagine a candle and blow it out silently, giving thanks for the privilege of caring, for each patient who has stabilized, for each smile from a colleague that sustains me. It is a real birthday, imperfect and full of purpose.

Un Cumpleaños en la UCI: Entre Guardián y Guardiada

¡Hola, comunidad de Hive! Mañana cumplo años, pero en lugar de velas, globos y una fiesta con amigos, estaré aquí, entre las paredes de la sala de Terapia Intensiva (UCI), con el pitido constante de los monitores, viales de medicamentos alineados y pacientes que luchan por cada respiración. Estoy de guardia todo el día, y el turno me acompañará hasta el amanecer de mi día especial. No hay escapatoria, pero en medio de esta realidad tan cruda, encuentro una belleza profunda y una lección de vida que solo el frente de batalla de la medicina puede regalar.
Aquí van algunas capturas que tomé durante mis rondas. Este pasillo interminable de la UCI, con sus paredes de mármol marrón y barandillas que sostienen cuerpos cansados, es mi escenario diario. Al fondo, la puerta del "Local de Soluciones" donde preparamos las infusiones que salvan vidas. El piso brilla bajo la luz del sol, reflejando también el agotamiento de turnos sin fin.
Aquí una compañera atendiendo a un paciente en la UCI, rodeada de monitores que vigilan signos vitales sin descanso. Es exactamente así como paso mis horas: ajustando ventiladores, administrando fármacos y ofreciendo palabras de aliento a familias que esperan con el corazón en la mano.
Y estos viales de Bromuro de Rocuronio en el alféizar, bajo la luz amarillenta, son parte de mi rutina. Representan la delgada línea entre la vida y la muerte que manejamos cada día.
Desde el balcón, el patio interno con ese mango gigante desafiando el tiempo junto al edificio amarillo desvaído. Los árboles invaden los pasillos, recordándome que la vida siempre encuentra forma de crecer, incluso en los lugares más duros.
Y esta vista del hospital con su torre de agua elevándose contra el cielo azul caribeño, palmeras meciéndose al viento y el paisaje rural extendiéndose: un recordatorio de que este hospital es un oasis en medio de la cotidianidad cubana.
Mañana, mientras marco otro año de vida aquí dentro, no tendré pastel ni brindis ruidosos. Quizás, al final del turno, imagine una vela y la sople en silencio, agradeciendo por el privilegio de cuidar, por cada paciente estabilizado, por cada sonrisa de colega que me sostiene. Es un cumpleaños real, imperfecto y lleno de propósito.
