My exciting Wednesday Walk a the Historic Quarantine Bay, Eden, NSW

So in a few previous posts over the last few years I have shown you some truly magical spots around the area that I grew up in which is the far south coast of New South Wales in particular the historic whaling town of Eden.

Last week I took you on an internal tour of the sensational Seahorse Inn here https://peakd.com/hive-155530/@chocolatescorpi/m-wednesday-walk-inside-the-historic-seahorse-inn and as Spike and I were driving home from picking up those chairs we saw a sign at a turn off that we have seen 1000 times before but have never taken, so this time we flicked on that blinker and hit those brakes hard to turn into the historic Quarantine Bay.

So when you talk about history, there's always many many layers of history and Quarantine Bay is no exception, having multiple ages and layers of geological history as well as indigenous history with the first nations tribes, specifically the Thawa/Thaua people of the Uin Nation and the more recent of the historyand the more recent of the history is the use of quarantine Bay is of the English settlers, namely George Bass is recorded as the first European to have shown a real interest in Twofold Bay. On the return leg of a voyage from Sydney to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), he took shelter in (and named) Snug Cove. That was in February 1798. https://www.southcoasthistory.org.au/history-stories-nsw-south-coast/eden

And curious as always an after far too many times of zooming past this turn off I ducked in there with Spike to have a look and the following photos are of the stunning discoveries we made when we got there.

And with thanks to @tattoodjay who created this amazing Community, so we could share our Wednesday walks with each other from around the world.

Quarantine Bay, located 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) south of Eden, is so named because a sailing ship with a smallpox epidemic amongst the people on board took refuge in this (then) isolated area. Many people died and were buried on shore in a communal grave. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twofold_Bay

Quarantine Bay's name comes from a 19th‑century quarantine station established here. Ships suspected of carrying infectious diseases—most notably a vessel with a smallpox outbreak—were cleared in this isolated area. Several crew members died and were buried in a communal grave along the shore.

In 1843 Benjamin Boyd purchased land in Twofold Bay with the aim of transporting cattle from the district.[11] Soon afterwards, Boyd started to build the Seahorse Inn adjacent to what is now called Boydtown Beach.

Boydtown Beach lies on the western shore of Twofold Bay just south of the entrance to the Nullica River, which is located at the southern end of Quarantine Bay. The Seahorse Inn is still used for tourist accommodation.

As you can see quarantine by is no longer inhabitant by those suffering from any kind of diseases such as smallpox but instead is inhabited by people who love the fresh air and the salt of the ocean.

After our little tour around the huge boat jetty here, Spike and I found a secret pathway down to a hidden beach that we will show you next week addition of the wonderful Wednesday walk, and until then be well, stay safe and be blessed.

Thank you so much for reading my post, I really hope that you enjoyed it and look forward to your comments and thoughts.

ChocolateScorpi is so incredibly grateful to the traditional custodians of this beautiful land that I call home and I thank you for caring for it for so long.

I pay my respects to elders, past, present and emerging and offer our hand to all first nations hands in order to help heal all of our relationships to the earth on this truly magical and extraordinary island nation that we now all call home.
