My Wednesday Walk inside the historic Seahorse inn
Hey there Wednesday Walkers around the world!
I hope that you're all out and about, enjoying your walk where ever you are in the world!
With thanks to @tattoodjay for creating this awesome #wednesdaywalk community, I would like to share with you a walk that I just took a couple of days ago at the Historic #SeahorseInn, in #Eden, NSW. https://www.seahorseinnhotel.com.au/about/history
I went down there to pickup some free chairs that my brother had found on FB marketplace to replace his old, broken kitchen chairs and I was more than happy to, as I LOVE the Seahorse Inn, having first been there with my family in the early 80's and a few times since, as the gorgeous town of Eden is only 30 minutes away from my home town of Bega.
This time I was able to go inside and have a good look around at the refurbishments that had been completed a few years before hand.
I also took this same walk 3 years ago here https://peakd.com/hive-155530/@chocolatescorpi/my-wonderful-wednesday-walk-around-the-stunningly-scenic-seahorse-inn-at-the-historic-ben-boyd-town-at-eden-in-nsw but never got a chance to go inside then, so I hope that you enjoy this walk with me.
The Inn was first built by Benjamin Boyd in the 1840s when Scottish-born Boyd - a banker, stockbroker and shipping investor - convinced himself there was a fortune to be made in the new and faraway Australia.
Boyd wanted part of it so in 1842, aged 41, he sailed to Australia in his 25-metre schooner Wanderer. Boyd saw Boydtown as the base of his pastoral and whaling empire and the Inn was to be the centre piece of the local trading area. The Inn was first opened for business in 1843 but as Boyd's empire failed. the Inn quickly fell into disrepair.

So as I was waiting for the receptionist to find out where the chairs were being stored, I took myself for a tour through the old Seahorse Inn, to see how they had managed to modernise the gorgeous old Inn, keeping the history of the place alive.
For almost a century, the Inn progressively fell apart due to thieves and vandals until 1936 when Richard Whiter a Victorian camping-park proprietor, planned an expansive holiday site and restoration of the Inn. By 1957 the Inn had been partly restored but further plans were thwarted by World War II and changing family circumstances.
Old b&w photos of the property wayyyy back when...
And I don't know what you think, but I think that they succeeded in mixing the allure of the old in with the new.
Sydney Property developer Bruce Lyon first visited Boydtown and the Seahorse Inn in 1974 and in his own words became “fascinated by its past, the beach front site, the inn itself and by everything we subsequently read in the Mitchell Library in Sydney”. Bruce from this point was determined to purchase the Boydtown property and was resolved to rebuild the area, including the restoration of the Inn into “something that would give pride to the local people”.
And this is the view from the reception door looking back out to the tower
And then this is the door to the back courtyard where I found the seats being stored
I love the old #architecture, and in this instance, you can really see the old age
Decades later, Bruce brought back the Inn to eternal life, completing the restoration of the Inn in 2006, after several years' work costing many millions under the guidance of leading architect Brian Dowling from Canberra and enhanced by fascinating photographs of the past loaned by the Whiter family.
And it looks like this tree is almost as old as the building!
So now my brother has a full set of matching chairs for both the kitchen and the dining room in our parent house and I'm sure that Mum would have really loved them too.
And now we can also say that we have a part of the Seahorse Inn history in our house too.
Thank you so much for reading my post, I really hope that you enjoyed it and look forward to your comments and thoughts.

I love it! It's great that they didn't just demolish the whole thing, but rather renovate and made a nice combination of the present and the past... Old photos on the wall, those 2 roof windows are amazing, and the backyard is even nicer than the front entrance... lol...
And he did it! I bet the local people are proud of this place! I would be! 🙂

Haa yes thank you! Me too!
I do remember it in the old days- back in the 80's when I was a teenager, but unfortunately those memories are fading too fast.
I am also very happy that they have kept much of the internal aesthetics but given them a huge spit and a polish, so I'm sure that he created a space for the locals to be proud.
And yes, the Seahorse Inn is a total icon and even better because it is in such a amazing area, just a few KM's away from the huge and historic Greencape lighthouse, and so many other amazing natural and man made attractions around that area too.
SO glad that you enjoyed it and thanks so much for the support once again!
See you in KL!!! 😃😃😃
