English
It's never too late to start something new.
It's never too late to learn a new language.
It's never too late to study a new career.
It's never too late to dare to do something you are passionate about, but never tried because of something as banal as "what would people say?".
It's never too late to try again, to take your failures, your mistakes, and turn them into a new opportunity in which, maybe, everything will turn out well this time.
We're used to feeling that life is consuming us as if it were fire, and to feel suffocated with that same flame. We put pressure on ourselves to do everything at once, or there will never be another chance, because life does not give second chances, because the train passes and does not stop for us, because then "I will be too old".
I came to think this way too, and worse: I came to torture myself for a long time.
I thought that right after graduating, at 16, I would enter college as soon as possible, that I would choose one of the careers that the vocational test, which I took when I was 14, chose for me and start studying non-stop. "You have to work hard because if I fall a year behind, I'm going to lose more time," I said to myself. And of course, there was never a lack of the typical calculations we might have made at some point: "I graduate at 16 and go to university. A career normally lasts 5 years, so at 21 or 22 at the latest, I have to be graduating". But the future is uncertain...
And those feelings didn't stop, they increased. I blamed myself a lot for having made that decision. I was disappointed in myself because I had given up a good career for nothing… And that's when I started to feel that my life was over, that I was not going to be useful for my studies and, therefore, I was useless, it was a very sad time. And a year flew by, while I was waiting for the 2020 situation to cease and the virtual classes to end.
During that year, as expected, a lot of things changed, but what changed was the focus of my regrets, because that's when I started to realize how much I loved the psychology career, but it's a career I can't afford. And then enrollment period started again at my old university. It was there when I forced myself to study a career that, at first, didn't appeal to me in the slightest, but I felt that I had to take it in order to have a good career that would ensure me a good future.
Maybe, in the end, the story has a happy ending, since I ended up really liking the industrial engineering career, but there was another thing that inspired me to write this: my mom.
When she was young, she studied to become a teacher, but she never finished her degree, and she spent a lot of her life just being a housewife. But recently, she told me something that inspired me a lot and made me change my way of seeing things. She told me that: she was already old, but she wanted to finish her career, because in the end when time goes by she will get older anyway, but at least she will have finished a career as she wanted to.
And now, she is a very good student, and she is very good at being a teacher, even today she told me that she got the highest grade in two tests, I am very happy for her.
Because I feel that's what it's all about, to look for opportunities yourself, life is yours, and you are in control. Life doesn't put things in front of you, you put those things in front of you. That's what I mean by looking for the opportunity. So, if you ever feel like you wanted to do something, but you didn't get it done, maybe it's a matter of waiting a little bit and working on it, doesn't matter if you're at your 50's, 60's, or 70's. You will still reach that age even if you dont do anything. I would even like you to remember Colonel Sanders, founder of KFC, who did it at 62.
Of course it's true that not all of us live the same life or have the same possibilities, not all of us are like Colonel Sanders maybe, but it is also true that not all of us are looking to start a fried chicken company. Some just want to do something they like, maybe I'm just an inexperienced 21-year-old girl, but you deserve to do it, because there is no age to be happy.
Finally, I want to thank you all for reading this far. This is my first post as such, not counting my presentation, so I want to thank the Catarsis community for giving me a space to express myself. Without anything else to add, I hope you have a nice day, hugs to all of you.
