WEEK 203: Special smells that link me to my loved ones

Hi friends,

Human beings have five senses and smell is one of those senses that can make us travel to faraway places both in distance and time.

A trip to childhood

I remember my grandmother with special fondness every time the smell of freshly baked bread reaches my nostrils.

In the mid 80's, in the rural areas of my country, humble families baked their own bread because due to agricultural activities there was no time to do the daily shopping and at the same time it was a way to economize on expenses.

I remember that with affection my grandmother always made a small bread roll with a piece of chorizo inside. This bun is called bollo preñado in Asturias and it was a delight to eat that little bun on the days that bread was baked in her house.

That is why the smell of freshly baked bread is my favorite smell. It brings back memories of childhood and of my late grandmother, with whom I had a special bond.

A smell that brings back good memories.

The smell of the sea for me who grew up 2 kilometers from the beach is a smell that must be on the list of my three favorite smells.

I spent many hours in my childhood, adolescence and adulthood at the beach near my father's house.

When I travel to the interior of Spain for a few days and get away from the sea, I feel that something is missing and that something is the smell of the sea that brings me so close to those feelings that I have so tied to my heart for the moments I can no longer enjoy with my father.

A smell that I always associate with friends and family.

I always associate family gatherings in the summer with preparing a barbecue for all of them.

Pork ribs, sausages, chicken and other meats are my specialty and I know that my family and friends love it when I get behind the barbecue and start cooking.

With friends, it's much the same. Every summer we have at least 2 or 3 get-togethers in some recreational area where I cook grilled meats for all of them.

Therefore, the smell of barbecue, which is certainly not a pleasant smell for me at first, has a special smell to be able to be sharing wonderful moments with my friends and family, who are the best treasures I have.
