Can a person who is in the midst of a difficulty realize that around him there is an architectural treasure full of history? Well, the answer is: Yes!

Being confined in the José María Vargas Hospital in the city of Caracas for reasons that I have described in other publications, I could not fail to see and admire the imposing architecture of that hospital.

This place is immense and when you go from one place to another you tend to get exhausted very quickly.

¿Puede una persona que está en medio de una dificultad darse cuenta que a su alrededor hay todo un tesoro arquitectónico cargado de historia? ¡Pues la respuesta es! ¡Si!

Estando recluidos en el Hospital José María Vargas de la ciudad de Caracas por motivos que he descrito en otras publicaciones no pude dejar de ver y admirar la arquitectura imponente de aquel Nosocomio.

Este lugar es inmenso y cuando vas de un lado a otro tiendes a estar agotado muy rápido.

The José María Vargas Hospital was built on land in the Altagracia parish of Caracas at the foot of our emblematic Avila or Warairarepano hill, a mountain that provides freshness to the facilities and on the other hand it is strategically well located since we can approach it easily because it is very close to Baralt Avenue and Cota Mil Avenue.

El Hospital José María Vargas fue construido en unos terrenos hacia la parroquia Altagracia de Caracas al pie de nuestro emblemático cerro Ávila o warairarepano, una montaña que brinda frescura a las instalaciones y por otra parte estratégicamente está bien ubicado ya que podemos acercarnos a él con facilidad por encontrarse muy cerca de la avenida Baralt y avenida Cota mil.

From what I could investigate it was founded in 1891 and its architecture was taken from the Lariboisière Hospital in Paris.
The architecture was what I fell in love with and when the storm in which I was immersed calmed down I was able to thoroughly detail the whole place.

Por lo que pude investigar fue fundado en el año 1891 y su arquitectura fue tomada del Hospital Lariboisière de París.

De la arquitectura fue de lo que me enamoré y cuando la tormenta en la que me encontraba sumergida se calmó pude detallar a fondo todo el lugar.

Running an errand inside the hospital, going to the blood lab, going to ward 3 to pick up the doctor, looking for something in the pharmacy was a walk for me. I remember one day I told my husband that I had turned everything that was happening to us into something else, you will say, but what could it be?

Para mí era un paseo ir a una diligencia dentro del hospital, llámese ir al laboratorio de sangre, ir a sala 3 a buscar al doctor, buscar algo en la farmacia Recuerdo que un día le dije a mi esposo que había convertido todo aquello que nos estaba pasando en otra cosa, ustedes dirán ¿pero qué cosa puede ser?

Remember the movie "Extraordinary" when the boy had to move through that school hallway and had to accept the looks and comments of everyone, it was definitely not easy, but he transformed his worst nightmare into something magical and thus his pain diminished. Well, something similar was happening to me, I tried to put on an inter-space helmet to not look away, so as not to hurt myself more than I was already feeling. I would put on my helmet and walk through those magical corridors where I could only see beautiful things, large structural columns, chapel-like doors and windows, beautiful gardens to sit in the sun or breathe fresh air after a long day of anguish and despair.

Recuerdan la película “extraordinario” cuando el niño tenía que desplazarse por aquel pasillo del colegio y tenía que aceptar las miradas y comentarios de todos, definitivamente no era nada sencillo, pero el transformo su peor pesadilla en algo mágico y así su dolor disminuía. Pues algo parecido me sucedía a mí, trataba de colocarme un casco inter espacial para no mirar a otro lado, para no hacerme más daño del que ya estaba sintiendo. Me colocaba mi casco y caminaba por aquellos pasillos mágicos donde solo podía ver cosas lindas, grandes columnas estructurales, puertas y ventanales con forma de capilla, jardines hermosos para sentarse a tomar el sol o respirar aire fresco después de un día largo de angustia y desesperación.

At first I was lost in those corridors, the main or oldest construction is made on a sloping terrain, I could describe that it is thought along that land divided completely by some planters from the bottom to the top where it ends with the church of the place. On each side of these planters are the rooms, I did not count how many there are in total but I got to see the number 29 in one of them, almost at the end.

Al principio me perdía por aquellos pasillos, la construcción principal o más antigua está hecha en un terreno inclinado, podría describir que está pensado a lo largo de aquel terreno dividido por completo por unas jardineras desde abajo hacia arriba donde finaliza con la iglesia del lugar. A cada lado de estas jardineras estar las salas, no conté cuantas hay en total pero llegue a ver el número 29 en una de ellas, casi al final.

On one side are the women's rooms and on the other side are the men's rooms. In the case of my husband who was hospitalized for a liver problem, he was assigned to the lower part of the hospital, internal medicine ward 3. There was an average of 10 beds for 10 patients, with a lounge at the entrance for the nurses and at the end a dormitory room for the doctors. There were also large bathrooms, but without water (we better not talk about this part).

Hacia un lado están las salas de mujeres y hacia el otro lado la de hombres. En el caso de mi esposo quien fue el que estuvo hospitalizado por un problema en el hígado le fue asignada hacia la parte de abajo del hospital sala 3 de medicina interna. Allí había un promedio de 10 camas para 10 pacientes, con un salón en la entrada para las enfermeras y al final una sala dormitorio para los médicos. También habían baños amplios, pero sin agua. (De esta parte mejor no hablemos)

Each room is numbered and they are also separated by wide corridors with planters where I imagine the patients could sunbathe and so they were not linked with others, thus managing to protect themselves from any contamination.

It could be said that half of the hospital is marked by a square where there is a statue of the Illustrious Doctor José María Vargas, to whom the hospital owes its name.

Cada sala esta enumerada y también están separadas por pasillos amplios con jardineras donde me imagino podían tomar el sol los pacientes y así no se ligaban con otros, logrando así protegerse de cualquier contaminación.

Se podría decir que la mitad del hospital está marcada por una plaza donde se encuentra la estatua del Ilustre Doctor José maría Vargas, a quien debe su nombre este recinto.

Towards the upper part, very close to the chapel, is the operating room, intensive care, surgery and pediatrics. I remember that one night (around 7:00) while I was waiting for the surgeon on duty I could see a light in the background (don't worry, they were not ghosts), it was the light coming out of the church and I could not resist the temptation to approach at that moment; there was a very kind lady there who immediately invited me to come in. I took the opportunity to pray and thank God that my husband was getting better. She told me that they had mass there twice a week and also prayed the rosary. The next day I could not stand it and I went to the mass where there were many doctors celebrating their 30 years of profession.

Hacia la parte superior muy cerca de la capilla está el quirófano, terapia intensiva, cirugía y pediatría. Recuerdo que una noche (como a las 7.00) mientras esperaba al cirujano de guardia pude ver al fondo una luz (tranquilos no eran fantasmas), era la luz que salía de la iglesia y no pude aguantar la tentación de acercarme en ese momento; allí había una señora muy amable quien de inmediato me invitó a pasar. Yo aproveché de orar y agradecer a Dios porque mi esposo ya estaba obteniendo mejoría. Ella me dijo que allí se hacía misa dos veces a la semana y también se rezaba el rosario. Al día siguiente no aguanté y me fui a la misa donde había muchos doctores celebrando sus 30 años de profesión.

I call this sector the upper part and it connects with the emergency room of the hospital, this emergency room is much newer and is always undergoing renovations.

In one of the images you can see the inclination of the street or land where this hospital was built, its main entrance is still preserved and when you enter you can see the beautiful square where the statue of the doctor is, as you can see everything is shaped like a cathedral, that's what I call it.

Este sector lo llamo la parte alta y conecta con la emergencia del hospital, esta emergencia es mucho más nueva y siempre está sufriendo remodelaciones.

En una de las imágenes podrás darte cuenta la inclinación de la calle o terreno donde fue construido este hospital, su entrada principal aún se conserva y al entrar puedes ver la hermosa plaza donde está la estatua del doctor, como pueden ver todo tiene forma de catedral, así la llamo yo.

On each side of this main entrance are built two annexes of the hospital, on the right hand side is the research center Jacinto Convid, who died recently and was the one who discovered the cure for leprosy. This is where they treat many skin conditions. On the other side is the outpatient and imaging building.

A cada lado de esta entrada principal están construidos dos anexos del nosocomio, a mano derecha está el centro de investigación Jacinto Convid, quien murió recientemente y fue quien descubrió la cura para la lepra. Allí es donde tratan muchas afecciones de la piel. Para el otro lado está el edificio de consultas externas e imagenología.

What I liked most about the hospital was the chapel of Dr. Jose Gregorio Hernandez, that was my favorite place where for a few moments I felt accompanied by God. It is a beautiful, simple chapel, it is located very close to the central square, its doors are made of pure wood and the cathedral-like design continues.

Lo que más me gustaba del hospital era la capilla del Doctor José Gregorio Hernández, ese era mi lugar preferido donde por pocos instantes me sentía acompañada con Dios. Es una capilla hermosa, sencilla, está ubicada muy cerca de la plaza central, sus puertas son de madera pura y continua en ellas el diseño de forma de catedral.

Although I would have liked to stay there for longer, I could only do it for brief moments to give thanks for the progress of each day and at the same time continue to pray for my husband's health.

Aunque me hubiese gustado estar allí por más tiempo solo podía hacerlo por breves instantes para agradecer el progreso de cada día y a su vez seguir pidiendo por la salud de mi esposo.

For those who do not know Dr. Jose Gregorio Hernandez he is called among Venezuelans the saint of the poor, because he never forsakes us and makes countless miracles concerning health, he dedicated his life to help everyone who needed it and although he wanted to do much more and made a great contribution to medicine, unfortunately he died in a car accident.

Para los que no conocen al doctor José Gregorio Hernández él es llamado entre los venezolanos el santo de los pobres, porque nunca nos desampara y hace innumerables milagros referentes a la salud, él dedico su vida para ayudar a todo el que lo necesitaba y aunque quería hacer mucho más y brindó un gran aporte a la medicina, lamentablemente falleció en un accidente automovilístico.

I am not going to lie to you, the hospital has a lot of humidity, it is being repaired in many of its areas, it lacks laboratories, beds, bathrooms, water, lighting, but what it does have and makes life easier is a number of doctors who leave their soul, life and heart in each case that touches them.

No les voy a mentir, el hospital tiene mucha humedad, está siendo reparado en muchas de sus áreas, le falta laboratorios, camas, baños, agua, iluminación, pero lo que si tiene y hace la vida más fácil es una cantidad de médicos que dejan su alma, vida y corazón en cada caso que les toca.

When my husband was finally in recovery he was finally able to walk with me hand in hand and together we walked through many of these corridors which he only knew about because I always talked to him about everything and its beauty.

Cuando mi esposo por fin estuvo en recuperación por fin pudo caminar conmigo de la mano y juntos recorrimos muchos de estos pasillos de los cuales solo conocía porque yo siempre le conversaba de todo aquello y de su belleza.

Before we thought that because of its shape it was an old convent but it was not, it was copied from another place destined to health and which is located as I said at the beginning in Paris. And how good it is that in life things as beautiful as this structure are copied and hopefully it will continue to endure among the people of Caracas for many years to come.

Antes pensábamos que por su forma se trataban de un antiguo convento pero no fue así, fue copiado de otro lugar destinado a la salud y que está ubicado como lo dije al principio en Paris. Y qué bueno que en la vida se copien cosas tan hermosas como esta estructura que ojala siga perdurando entre los pobladores de Caracas por muchos años más.

I can only tell you that although it is a very old hospital and there are always people who tell stories about nurses who appear at night, I never saw anything. hehehehehe.

Solo les puedo decir que aunque es un hospital muy antiguo y siempre hay personas que echan sus cuentos de enfermeras que aparecen por las noches yo nunca vi nada. hehehehe.

I left this hospital 15 days ago, grateful to God and to the Blessed Virgin, grateful to all the doctors, nurses, orderlies, patients, angels that pass through your life in this moment of difficulty, because my husband recovered satisfactorily and we returned home stronger and full of life, love and courage to continue facing things.

Me fui de este hospital hace 15 dias, agradecida con Dios y con La Virgen santísima, agradecida con todos los doctores, enfermeras, camilleros, pacientes, ángeles que pasan por tu vida en este momento de dificultad, porque mi esposo se recuperò satisfactoriamente y volvimos a casa mas fortalecidos y llenos de vida, amor y valor para seguir afrontando las cosas.
