Alternative Photography: between rebelliousness and gentleness [ENG/ESP]
Greetings to everyone in the Visual Shots community! Today I'm joining you all to share a new photo collection. This time, it's a series of photographs I managed to take with my partner (who is the author/photographer of the images, and I served as the model), as part of the production of ideas we had in mind: alternative styles (fashion/trends) and feminine beauty. To be honest, I think I was the one most excited about it (haha), as he tends to have a different artistic direction than I do. However, we found moments to make this project a reality.
¡Saludos a todos en la comunidad de Visual Shots! El día de hoy me uno por aquí para compartir con ustedes una nueva recopilación fotográfica. En esta oportunidad se trata de una serie de fotografías que logré tomar junto a mi pareja (quién es el autor/fotógrafo de las imágenes y yo servi cómo modelo), cómo parte de la producción de ideas que teníamos en mente; estilos alternativos (moda/tendencia) y la belleza femenina. Siendo sincera, creo que era yo la que estaba más entusiasmada por ello (jajaja), pues él, suele tener una dirección artística diferente a la mía. Sin embargo, encontramos momentos para hacer realidad este proyecto.
We started taking these types of photographs when I was about 24, and it practically became a translation for us, so now, at 28, I needed to do something new to commemorate this year, 2025. So we thought of something new, but similar to what we had worked on before. I really like alternative aesthetics, playing a bit between gothic, grunge, and the like, taking some ideas from Japanese trends (for example, overexposed photographs, where the face and body are very pale due to the flash). It's always fun to be able to do this because, although I like that trend, here in Venezuela it's quite expensive to get the clothes I like, so I have to take what I have, add some accessories, and figure out how to come up with the mental image I have for that photo shoot.
Empezamos a tomar este tipo de fotografías cuando yo tenía unos 24 años y se volvió prácticamente una traducción para nosotros, por lo que ahora en mis 28 años, necesitaba volver a realizar algún proyecto para conmemorar este año 2025. Así que pensamos en algo nuevo, pero similar en cuanto a lo que ya habíamos trabajado anteriormente. A mí me gusta mucho la estética alternativa, jugando un poco entre lo gótico, grunge y por allí, tomando algunas ideas de las tendencias japonesas (por ejemplo, las fotografías sobre expuestas, dónde se luce un rostro y cuerpo muy pálido por el flash). Siempre es divertido poder hacer esto porque, aunque me gusta esa moda, acá en Venezuela es bastante costoso hacerse con vestimentas con las que me gustan, por lo que me toca coger lo que tengo, añadir algunos accesorios y buscar resolver para dar con la imagen mental que tengo para esa sesión de fotografía.
My partner is quite patient, so he usually helps me with the whole process. This involves a series of steps such as: makeup, hair, clothing, getting on stage, and starting work. I usually tell him that although I know these photographs are particularly personal—that is, they are photographs for us and to have as memories—it doesn't mean that it's a job that must be done with all the care that any type of work requires. This is how you strive to at least have a little bit of demand and discipline; it pushes you to do your best and give your best. I really liked the photographs; they have a sweet and slightly wild/rebellious touch. I just edited them a bit with the Polar editor to achieve that atmosphere, which I think adds a bit of magic. Mi pareja es bastante paciente, así que me suele ayudar en el proceso de todo esto. Dicha cuestión se da en una serie de pasos tales cómo: maquillaje, peinado, vestimenta, bajar al escenario y comenzar a trabajar. Yo suelo decirle a él que aunque se que estás fotografías son particularmente algo personal, es decir, son fotografías para nosotros y tenerlas de recuerdo, no quita que es un trabajo que debe hacerse con todo el esmero que requiere cualquier tipo de trabajo. Así es cómo se busca al menos tener un poco de exigencia y disciplina; empuja a que uno haga lo mejor y de lo mejor de si. Me han gustado bastante las fotografías, tienen un toque dulce y un poco salvaje/rebelde. Solo edite un poco con el editor Polar para lograr esa atmósfera que a mi parecer, le añade algo de magia. At first glance, I was going to say that the blacks were a little too crushed to make up a well exposed image, but reading the post in full! (Very important!)
Makes it very evident that this was a stylistic choice that you made, and as a result, the intentional effort put into presenting the images in this way makes them better than just presenting a shot as it came out of the camera and calling it a day.
Beyond the dark aesthetics of the gloomy and goth mood you've taken for these images, and its recurring theme, is there a particular reason, or a point in your life (if you're willing to talk about it!) that you could point to that took you in this direction?
Greetings. I appreciate your honesty. I think it can really give the impression that it is not a finished (or not well enough) executed job. I tend to have some duels with my partner as he prefers a cleaner look with no edits, but I like to play with it.
Regarding the last question, I don't think I could tell you exactly what the timing was. My influence is perhaps in music, as they are genres that I'm quite attracted to. And also some of them have an aesthetic that I like. Like Shirley Manson and Liv Kristine. Some movie influences as well. Although in general, I just pick whatever it is just because I like it. I loved the early Theatre of Tragedy albums! And Leaves' Eyes with Liv had some great tracks too. I also happen to be a fan of Garbage, too :)
Have you seen the Underworld film? The cinematography at the start of it is very impressive, and well, there's no way to describe it other than goth.
That's right, the first Theater of Tragedy albums with her are beautiful. And well, Underworld is a classic too!
