Hello HIVEs!
Established by the British São Paulo Railway Company in the mid-19th century, Vila de Paranapiacaba is located approximately 61 kilometers by road southeast of downtown São Paulo.
The construction of this zig-zag railway line in the surrounding hilly terrain arose to export coffee beans from the area via the port of Santos.
In 1982 the operation of the plant was finally stopped. Since then it has been left to decay. The route led through some tunnels and over bridges through the Atlantic rainforest. There were some steam-powered machine houses that powered a cable car.
Vila de Paranapiacaba wurde Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts von der britischen São Paulo Railway Company gegründet und liegt etwa 61 Straßenkilometer südöstlich des Stadtzentrums von São Paulo.
Der Bau dieser Zick-Zack-Bahnstrecke im hügeligen Gelände der Umgebung entstand, um Kaffeebohnen aus der Gegend über den Hafen Santos zu exportieren.
1982 wurde der Betrieb der Anlage endgültig eingestellt. Seitdem ist sie dem Verfall preisgegeben. Die Strecke führte durch einige Tunnel und über Brücken durch den Atlantikregenwald. Es gab einige Dampfbetriebene Maschinenhäuser, die eine Seilbahn antrieben.
Funicular Is Closed
Actually I wanted to do some light paintings together with Geane in one of the tunnels. Unfortunately, the plan was thwarted.
Since I didn't come home without a photo, I'm sharing them with you here. Let's start from scratch:
We got there at 9:00 a.m. with two backpacks packed full of equipment and took a look around.
At the tourist information we were informed that entering the old route is forbidden under penalty of penalty, since last year a tourist was killed by accident on one of the bridges. A major setback for our project. A light painting here was impossible for us that day. But I didn't really want to risk a fine of 1000.00 euros. So I looked for motives in the village.
Eigentlich wollte ich zusammen mit Geane in einem der Tunnel einige Lightpaintings machen. Leider wurde der Plan durchkreuzt.
Da ich nicht ohne ein Foto nach Hause kam, teile ich sie hier mit euch. Fangen wir ganz von vorn an:
Wir kamen morgens um 9:00 Uhr mit zwei Rucksäcken, vollgepackt mit Equipment, dort an und schauten uns erstmal um.
An der Touristeninformation klärte man uns auf, dass das Betreten der alten Strecke unter Strafe verboten ist, seit im letzten Jahr ein Tourist von einer der Brücken tödlich verunglückte. Ein schwerer Rückschlag für unser Vorhaben. Ein Lightpainting hier war für uns an diesem Tag also unmöglich. Aber 1000,00 EURO Strafe wollte ich nicht unbedingt riskieren. Also suchte ich nach Motiven im Dorf.
Some locations are freely accessible or so poorly secured that you could enter them without problems. A part of the village is already very dilapidated, as you can see in the following picture.
Einige Locations sind frei zugänglich oder so schlecht abgesichert, dass man sie ohne Probleme betreten konnte. Ein Teil des Dorfes ist schon sehr verfallen, wie man im folgenden Bild erkennen kann.
The Steam Locomotives
There were some photos of rusted trains on the internet. Most stood behind fences. However, one could be approached. It consisted of three steam locomotives.
Im Internet gab es einige Fotos von verrosteten Zügen. Die Meisten dieser Loks und Wagons waren eingezäunt.
Ein Zug, aus drei Dampfloks bestehend, war jedoch frei zugänglich.
The Electric Locomotive
During our tour of the village, I noticed the old electric locomotive, which was also fenced off. However, there is a construction site access road in this area and it was open. So we took advantage of the hour and entered the premises.
Bei unserem Rundgang durch das Dorf fiel mir die alte E-Lok auf, die ebenfalls eingezäunt war.
In diesem Bereich befindet sich jedoch eine Baustellenzufahrt und die stand offen. Also nutzen wir die Gunst der Stunde und betraten das Gelände.
The texture on this loco looks very good and just screamed for light painting. However, it can be assumed that the entrance to the construction site will be closed at the end of the working day. In addition, we wouldn't be able to get away from here by public transport after dark. So take a few photos with you and let's go.
Die Textur an dieser Lok sieht sehr gut aus und schrie geradezu nach einem Lightpainting. Allerdings ist anzunehmen, dass die Baustelleneinfahrt am Ende des Arbeitstages geschlossen wird. Ausserdem würden wir hier nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit nicht mehr mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln weg kommen. Also noch schnell ein paar Fotos mitnehmen und weiter gehts.
Next to the electric locomotive there are two wagons that are slowly wasting away in the rust.
Neben der E-Lok stehen noch zwei Wagons, die langsam im Rost dahin siechen.
The Bullet Train
A little further I discovered two S-Bahn wagons, which stand in the landscape like the crashed Bullet Train. These are also very badly weathered. Nature takes its part back.
Ein Stück weiter entdeckte ich noch zwei S-Bahn-Wagons, die wie der verunglückte Bullet Train in der Landschaft stehen.
Auch diese sind sehr stark verwittert. Die Natur holt sich ihren Teil zurück.
The Museum
Now it was time to visit the museum. The sign said it was open Wednesday through Sunday between 10am and 4pm. There are other trains in better condition to see. There is also a large, restored steam engine in the museum that was used to drive the cable system. There are also some dark halls in the museum: the last hope of getting a light painting after all. It was 12:00 when we got to the cash desk and there was no one around.
Nun wurde es Zeit für einen Museumsbesuch. Auf dem Hinweisschild stand, dass es Mittwochs bis Sonntags zwischen 10:00 und 16:00Uhr öffnet. Dort gibt es weitere Züge in einem besseren Zustand zu sehen. Weiterhin steht im Museum eine große, restaurierte Dampfmaschine mit der das Seilsystem angetrieben wurde. Im Museum sind auch einige dunkle Hallen: die letzte Hoffnung, doch noch ein Lightpainting zu bekommen. Es war 12:00Uhr als wir an der Kasse eintrafen und es war niemand anzutreffen.
So we visited the tourist information again. There they explained to us that the opening hours outside of the weekends are ignored and that the museum is only open to registered groups. Yeah great! Something else is being revealed on the internet. 😡
Nothing of what was presented there corresponded to what we found at this place. Even the station, where a historic express train normally stops, was empty all day.
Also besuchten wir erneut die Touristeninformation. Dort klärte man uns auf, dass die Öffnungszeiten ausserhalb der Wochenenden ignoriert werden und das Museum nur noch für angemeldete Gruppen geöffnet wird. Ja, toll! Im Internet wird da etwas ganz anderes preisgegeben. 😡 Nichts von dem, was dort dargestellt wurde, entsprach dem was wir an diesem Ort vorfanden. Selbst der Bahnhof in dem normalerweise ein historischer Express-Zug hält, stand den ganzen Tag leer.
Sorry, that's why there is no light painting here today. I hope that it was still an interesting post for you. We will spend a few more days in South America. I do not give up.

Sehr coole Eisenbahnen. Schade, dass man nachts nicht so einfach rankommt.
Vielleicht klappt es ja noch an einem anderen Tag. Ein paar andere Locations habe ich auch angefragt, bzw. angeschaut. Ist alles nichts geworden. Sao Paulo habe ich jetzt verlassen. Auf dem Land wird es einfacher mit dem Lightpainting.

Hätte ich ein eigenes Auto, wäre ich auch nicht ohne Lightpainting nach Hause gefahren. Mit UBER und Co oder den Öffentlichen kommt man Nachts hier nicht mehr weg. 😉 Ich behalte die Location auf meinem Zettel.

Fascinating location. I love the rusted, corroding train parts. Anything in a state of decay like that catches my attention. Really great photos. Very sad to see you couldn't do lightpainting here. How kind of them to be so inaccurate on the internet with information. That's disappointing. Still enjoyed all the photos.

When I saw the small photo, I knew I was in for good things after I clicked on this post, but I didn't expect it to be good this much. You captured the rusted, decaying train, the paint peeling and the forgotten atmosphere very well. Your editing and shooting angles are great. I really got the mood and the feel of the place. 😱
