Light Painting With A Soviet-Made Lens

The weather still doesn't permit light painting in the open air at the moment. Rain, 5°C and strong winds. So I retreated to the studio. I actually just wanted to try out the lens I had just bought. It is an Industar-61L/Z 50mm f/2.8. It was manufactured in the Soviet Union. I bought it on E-Bay for well under 100 euros. Adapters for these lenses are available for all common cameras at a reasonable price. I bought two of them for 7 euros.

Ein Lightpainting unter freiem Himmel lässt das Wetter zurzeit immer noch nicht zu. Regen, 5°C und starker Wind. Also zog ich mich ins Studio zurück. Eigentlich wollte ich nur mein gerade erworbenes Objektiv ausprobieren. Es handelt sich um ein Industar-61L/Z 50mm f/2.8. Es wurde in der Sowjetunion hergestellt. Erworben habe ich es bei E-Bay für weit unter 100 Euro. Adapter für diese Objektive sind für alle gängigen Kameras kostengünstig zu haben. Ich habe zwei Stück für 7 Euro erworben.

The Set

I built a set consisting of black fibreglass on a torch with a colour filter, a second torch that I prepared with a silicone ball and a small ultrasonic fog machine.

I placed the fog machine in a shot glass filled with water. Everything was attached to a tripod with the help of tape and a clamp.
As you can see on the cover picture, I tried to create a kind of big bang.

Ich baute ein Set, bestehend aus schwarzem Glasfiber an einer Taschenlampe mit Farbfilter, einer zweiten Taschenlampe die ich mit einem Silikonball präpariert habe und einer kleinen Ultraschall - Nebelmaschine auf. Die Nebelmaschine stellte ich in ein, mit Wasser gefüllten Schnapsglas. Alles wurde mit Hilfe von Tape und einer Klemme an einem Stativ befestigt. Damit versuchte ich, wie auf dem Titelbild zu sehen, eine Art Urknall darzustellen.

The fog machine is ideal for such small sets. It also keeps the air in the room clean. The power supply is provided by a power bank. At just over 3 euros, it is also affordable for everyone.

Die Nebelmaschine ist ideal für solche kleinen Sets geeignet. Ausserdem wird die Raumluft sauber gehalten. Die Spannungsversorgung erfolgt durch eine Powerbank. Mit etwas über 3 Euro ist sie auch für jeden erschwinglich.

However, I only wanted to test the bokeh of the lens in order to be able to consciously use the knowledge gained later. The shape of the bokeh changes greatly at different apertures. At f/2.8 and f/16, the light points are round. At f/11 they become hexagonal and at all other settings sawtooth-shaped, as can be seen in the pictures above.

Testen wollte ich allerdings nur das Bokeh des Objektivs, um die gewonnene Erkenntnis später bewusst einsetzen zu können. Die Form des Bokehs ändert sich sehr stark bei verschiedenen Blenden. Bei Blende 2.8 und 16 werden die Lichtpunkte rund dargestellt. Bei Blende 11 werden sie sechseckig und in allen anderen Einstellungen sägezahnförmig, wie auf den Bildern oben zu sehen.

After testing the bokeh, I played a little with the CRT (Camera Rotation Tool). The result was the image above.
This in turn gave me further ideas, which I could not realise with a fixed focal length without changing the lens.
Since it doesn't fit the topic today, I'll report on it next Sunday. So stay tuned!

Nach dem Test des Bokehs, spielte ich noch etwas mit dem CRT (Camera Rotation Tool). Heraus kam das obige Bild. Das brachte mich wiederum auf weitere Ideen, die ich allerdings nicht mit einer Festbrennweite ohne Objektivtausch realisieren könnte. Da es heute nicht zum Thema passt, werde ich darüber am nächsten Sonntag berichten. Also bleibt dran!

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
