Hello HIVEs!
As already announced in the last article, I report on the second part of our bicycle tour along the river Fulda up to the Wasserkuppe, where I realised my light painting.
Our tour took us a total of 505 km over 2331 metres of altitude, which we managed in 26.46 hours of pure riding time on the tandem without an electric motor, only with the power of two hearts. According to my app "Sportstracker", each of us burned 12798 kcal during the tour. We needed a few beers to compensate for the electrolyte deficits.
The tour took us from Steinhagen via Hameln, Bad Karlshafen, Kassel Wilhelmshöhe, Melsungen, Schlitz to Poppenhausen to the Wasserkuppe and back to Fulda. From there we took the train back home.
Wie schon im letzten Artikel angekündigt, berichte ich über den zweiten Teil unserer Fahrradtour am Fluss Fulda entlang bis auf die Wasserkuppe, wo ich mein Lightpainting umsetzte.

Wasserkuppe
The last stage was the hardest. After all, we had 950 metres of altitude to climb. First we checked into the hotel halfway and left our luggage there. With camera, tripod and a few torches, we then continued steeply uphill to the Wasserkuppe.
Once we reached the top, we looked for a restaurant. Pushing the tandem up the steep hiking trail in hot weather caused a deficit of liquid. We made up for it with a few beers. Electrolytes! Then, of course, we visited the Fulda spring. After all, the Fulda led us to the Wasserkuppe!
It was already dawn. Time for a check of the location. I had chosen a RADOM for this night. A relic from the time of the cold war. Originally there were several of these radar stations on the Wasserkuppe. After reunification they became useless and were to be removed. Under pressure from the non-profit RADOM Flug gGmbH, one was preserved.
Die letzte Etappe war die härteste. Immerhin hatten wir 950 Höhenmeter zu überwinden. Zuerst checkten wir auf halben Weg im Hotel ein und ließen unser Gepäck dort. Mit Kamera, Stativ und einigen Taschenlampen ging es dann, steil Bergauf, weiter auf die Wasserkuppe.
Oben abgekommen, schauten wir nach einem Restaurant. Bei heißen Wetter das Tandem den steilen Wanderweg hochzuschieben, hat für ein Defizit an Flüssigkeit gesorgt. Das glichen wir mit ein paar Bierchen aus. Elektrolyte! Dann besuchten wir natürlich die Fuldaquelle. Schließlich führte uns ja die Fulda auf die Wasserkuppe!
Es dämmerte bereits. Zeit für ein Check der Location. Ich hatte mir für diese Nacht ein RADOM ausgesucht. Ein Relikt aus der Zeit des kalten Krieges. Ursprünglich standen mehrere dieser Radarstationen auf der Wasserkuppe. Nach der Wiedervereinigung sind sie nutzlos geworden und sollten entfernt werden. Auf Druck der gemeinnützigen RADOM Flug gGmbH blieb einer erhalten.

The Plan
My plan was to include the Milky Way in the light painting. In the afternoon, it still looked as if nothing would come of the plan. Rain clouds kept moving through. But in the late afternoon the weather cleared up and the clouds disappeared. Bright sunshine! But there was still some haze in the air.
According to the PhotoPills app, the Milky Way should have reached the right position for the shot after midnight. So there was still plenty of time left for camera setup and a few test shots.
The wind was picking up and it was getting noticeably colder. Fortunately, we were well prepared. The wind- and rainproof cycling clothes made even these weather conditions bearable.
Mein Plan war es, die Milchstrasse in das Lightpainting einzubeziehen. Noch am Nachmittag sah es so aus, als wurde nichts aus dem Plan. Es zogen immer wieder Regenwolken durch. Doch am späten Nachmittag klärte sich das Wetter, die Wolken verzogen sich. Strahlender Sonnenschein! Es lag aber noch etwas Dunst in der Luft.
Laut PhotoPills-App sollte nach Mitternacht die Milchstraße die für die Aufnahme richtige Position erreicht haben. Es war also noch sehr viel Zeit für die Kameraeinrichtung und ein paar Test-Shoots übrig.
Der Wind frischte auf und es wurde spürbar kälter. Zum Glück waren wir gut vorbereitet. Die wind- und regendichte Fahrradbekleidung machte auch diese Witterungsbedingungen erträglich.

Illumination RADOM During The Blue Hour
The Light Painting
The cover picture is part of my series "SAFE!". A silk curtain frames part of the landscape. Normally I shoot or convert this series to black and white.
Here the RADOM is illuminated red by an obstruction light from an aerial next to it. This created an exciting mood that I wanted to use in the picture.
To bring the silk curtain into the picture, I used a silicone cord on a RYU'S LIGHTWORKS torch. I set this to the lowest setting (8 lumens) as I was working at ISO 3600 and open aperture. Geane operated the camera. I had 30 seconds for the performance. This was sufficient in my case. In the second picture I used the same camera settings without any light painting.
Das Titelbild reiht sich in meine Serie "SAFE!" ein. Ein seidener Vorhang fasst einen Teil der Landschaft ein. Normalerweise nehme ich diese Serie in Schwarzweiß auf oder wandele sie in Schwarzweiß um. Hier wird der RADOM durch eine Hindernisleuchte von einer daneben stehenden Antenne rot angeleuchtet. Das erzeugte eine spannende Stimmung, die ich im Bild nutzen wollte.
Um den Seidenen Vorhang ins Bild zu bringen, nutzte ich eine Silikonschnur an einer RYU´S LIGHTWORKS -Taschenlampe. Diese stellte ich auf die niedrigste Stufe (8 Lumen) ein, da ich bei ISO 3600 und offener Blende arbeitete. Geane bediente die Kamera. Für die Performance hatte ich 30 Sekunden. Das war in meinem Fall ausreichend. In dem zweiten Bild verwendete ich die gleichen Kameraeinstellungen ohne jedes Lightpainting.

In the picture above, the star trails were recorded. The light painting was again taken with a torch and silicone cord. This time you can see a black stripe at the bottom of the "curtain". This is my thumb and index finger, because the end cover slipped off the silicone string during the performance. This was used to illuminate my hand from below. The torch was operated in strobe mode level 1 during this shot.
The picture below shows the RADOM during the blue hour. I illuminated the RADOM there with a NOCTIGON DM11 and orange colour filter. For the silk curtain, I again used the silicone cord on a RYU'S LIGHTWORKS torch. This time I set it to level 3 (190 lumens).
Im Bild oben wurden die Sternspuren aufgezeichnet. Das Lightpainting wurde wieder mit Taschenlampe und Silikonschnur aufgenommen. Diesmal sieht man am unteren Ende des "Vorhangs" einen schwarzen Streifen. Das sind Daumen und Zeigefinger von mir, denn die Endabdeckung ist während der Performance von der Silikonschnur gerutscht. Damit wurde meine Hand von unten angeleuchtet. Die Taschenlampe wurde während dieser Aufnahme im Stroboskop-Modus Stufe 1 betrieben.
Das Bild unten zeigt den RADOM während der blauen Stunde. Den Radom habe ich dort mit einer NOCTIGON DM11 und orangenem Farbfilter ausgeleuchtet. Für den Seidenen Vorhang nutzte ich wieder die Silikonschnur an einer RYU´S LIGHTWORKS -Taschenlampe. Diesmal stellte ich die Stufe 3 (190 Lumen) ein.

The Long Way Home
I was looking forward to the return trip on the tandem. It was a 9.5km, 550m downhill ride to the hotel. I equipped the tandem with two torches. The area in front of us was illuminated as bright as day.
On the whole route we only had to pedal a few hundred metres and still achieved speeds of up to 80km/h. Despite braking before a town, we were shown 61 km/h on the display installed there.
That's how you can misjudge! The rapid descent was, so to speak, the crowning glory of a light painting evening.
Auf die Rückfahrt mit dem Tandem hatte ich mich schon gefreut. Bis zum Hotel ging es über 9,5km 550m Bergab. Das Tandem rüstete ich mit zwei Taschenlampen aus. Der Bereich vor uns wurde taghell ausgeleuchtet. Auf der ganzen Strecke mussten wir nur wenige hundert Meter in die Pedalen treten und erreichten trotzdem Geschwindigkeiten von bis zu 80km/h. Trotz des Abbremsen vor einer Ortschaft wurden uns 61 km/h am dort installierten Display angezeigt. So kann man sich verschätzen! Die rasante Abfahrt war sozusagen der krönende Abschluss eines Lightpainting-Abends.

What Is Light Painting?
Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.
Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.

Sehr coole Location und sehr coole Bilder. Kann man da nicht mit Auto hoch fahren?
Danke Sven! 😊 Natürlich kann man auch sein motorisierten Gefährt auf dem ca. 1km entfernten Parkplatz parken und den Rest der Strecke zu Fuß zurücklegen. Es gibt sogar Ferienhäuser und ein Hotel dort oben. Für das leibliche Wohl 🍻wird dort auch gesorgt. Es ist für jeden etwas dabei.
