Light Painting In São Paulo

São Paulo is not one of my favourite places to stay, although the city has a lot to offer in terms of culture. The condition of the city is deteriorating visibly. A nightmare of steel and concrete, dirty, criminal and corrupt. The cacophony of sounds, consisting of the noise of the road traffic, the numerous construction sites and businesses in the vicinity, hardly lets me sleep. That is why I am only passing through here: Meeting friends and family, doing some official business and quickly heading south to Santa Catarina.
São Paulo gehört nicht zu meinen favorisierten Aufenthaltsorten, obwohl die Stadt auch einiges an Kultur zu bieten hat. Der Zustand der Stadt verschlechtert sich zusehends. Ein Alptraum aus Stahl und Beton, schmutzig, kriminell und korrupt. Die Kakophonie der Geräusche, bestehend aus Lärm des Strassenverkehrs, der zahlreichen Baustellen und Gewerbe in der Umgebung, lässt mich kaum schlafen. Deshalb befinde ich mich hier auch nur auf der Durchreise: Freunde und Familie treffen, ein paar Amtswege erledigen und schnell weg Richtung Süden, nach Santa Catarina.

Especially the chaos of concrete buildings and car traffic exerts a certain charm on me to capture this as a light painting. I already knew the hotel I had booked and the Villa Mariana area from my previous stays. Therefore, I had concrete ideas about how I would realise a light painting. In any case, the brutalist concrete style should be expressed. My suitcases with my camera and light painting equipment finally arrived at the hotel on the third day. So nothing more stood in the way of the project.
Gerade das Chaos aus Beton-Bauten und Autoverkehr übt auf mich einen gewissen Reiz aus, dies als Lightpainting festzuhalten. Das gebuchte Hotel und die Gegend Villa Mariana kannte ich bereits von meinen früheren Aufenthalten. Daher hatte ich konkrete Vorstellungen, wie ich ein Lightpainting umsetzen würde. Es soll auf jeden Fall der Brutalismus-Beton-Style zu Ausdruck kommen. Meine Koffer mit meinem Kamera- und Lightpainting-Equipment sind am dritten Tag endlich im Hotel eingetroffen. So stand dem Projekt nichts mehr im Weg.

Making Of

It was supposed to be a light painting without torches or other additional light sources. I used various HD filters, a tripod and a rotation tool. As you can see in the first two pictures, thanks to the HD filters I could already start with the camera rotations at dusk. For the cover picture, I used a polarising filter, a GND8 filter, and an ND64 filter. I adjusted the graduated filter exactly in the middle of the image. I exposed each side for 30 seconds. After turning the camera 180°, I also turned the graduated filter 180°. The result was a conglomerate of concrete blocks floating freely in the air, resembling a favela. In the second attempt, I proceeded exactly as in the first picture. I only changed the focal length.
Es sollte ein Lightpainting ohne Taschenlampen oder anderen zusätzlichen Lichtquellen werden. Ich setzte verschiedene HD-Filter, ein Stativ und ein Rotationstool ein. Wie auf den ersten beiden Bildern zu sehen, konnte ich dank der HD-Filter bereits bei Dämmerung mit den Kamerarotationen beginnen. Für das Titelbild setzte ich einen Polarisations-Filter, einen GND8-Filter, und einen ND64-Filter ein. Den Verlaufsfilter justierte ich exakt in der Mitte des Bildes. Jede Seite belichtete ich 30 Sekunden. Nachdem ich die Kamera um 180° gedreht hatte, drehte ich auch den Verlaufsfilter um 180°. So entstand ein in der Luft frei schwebendes Konglomerat aus Betonblöcken, welches einer Favela ähnelt. Bei dem zweiten Versuch ging ich genau wie im ersten Bild vor. Ich änderte hier nur die Brennweite.

The third image was inspired by a film called INCEPTION. For this I adjusted the centre point above the sea of houses and rotated the camera 180°. The exposure time per side was approx. 30s. Here, too, a polarising filter and an ND filter were used.

Das dritte Bild entstand durch eine Inspiration eines Films namens INCEPTION. Dafür justierte ich den Mittelpunkt oberhalb des Häusermeers und rotierte die Kamera um 180°. Die Belichtungszeit pro Seite betrug ca. 30s . Auch hier kam ein Polarisations- und ein ND-Filter zum Einsatz.

Diagonally opposite the hotel is a 22-storey building. For the fourth picture, I aligned the camera so that a corner of the building is visible in the middle of the picture. By rotating it by 180°, it looks twice as high.
Dem Hotel schräg gegenüber steht ein 22-Stöckiges Gebäude. Für das vierte Bild richtete ich die Kamera so aus, dass eine Ecke des Gebäudes in der Mitte des Bildes zu sehen ist. Durch die Rotation um 180° wirkt dieses doppelt so hoch.

I then tried the same with a 90° rotation. Personally, I like this picture even more. A lump of steel and concrete floating like a spaceship.
Das gleich probierte ich danach mit einer 90° Rotation. Dieses Bild gefällt mir persönlich noch viel besser. Ein, wie ein Raumschiff schwebender, Klumpen aus Stahl und Beton.

In the next picture, I aimed the centre of the picture at the end of Av. Paulista and rotated the camera 180° again. At the bottom I caught a red phase of the traffic lights. Above, traffic was flowing through a green light. I would have liked to see a bit more oncoming traffic to get some red in the picture. Unfortunately, the evening rush hour traffic didn't allow that. The illuminated trees float like green clouds in the sky and seem to be reflected below. I liked that a lot.
Im nächsten Bild richtete ich die Bildmitte auf das Ende der Av. Paulista und rotierte die Kamera wieder um 180°. Unten erwischte ich eine Rotphase der Ampel. Oben floss der Verkehr über eine grüne Ampel. Ich hätte mir noch etwas mehr Gegenverkehr gewünscht um etwas Rot ins Bild zu bekommen. Leider gab das der Feierabendverkehr nicht her. Die beleuchteten Bäume schweben wie grüne Wolken am Himmel und spiegeln sich scheinbar unten wider. Das gefiel mir schon mal gut.

I then repeated the whole thing again with a 90° rotation. During this shot I paid attention to the green traffic light phase. This time there was also a bit more oncoming traffic in the picture, which I like better overall.
Das Ganze wiederholte ich dann noch einmal mit einer 90° Rotation. Während dieser Aufnahme achtete ich auf die grüne Ampelphase. Diesmal kam auch etwas mehr Gegenverkehr ins Bild, was mir insgesamt besser gefällt.

When my wife visited me on the roof terrace to let me know that we were about to be invited for dinner, I only had time for one last attempt. I focused on the lights of the neighbouring hotel, rotated the camera 270°, covered the lens, panned the camera on the tripod towards Paulista Av. and opened the lens for about 30 seconds. Done!

Als meine Frau mich auf der Dachterrasse besuchte, um mir bescheid zu geben, dass wir gleich zum Essen eingeladen sind, blieb mir nur noch Zeit für einen letzten Versuch. Ich Fokussierte die Lichter des Nachbarhotels, rotierte die Kamera um 270°, deckte das Objektiv ab, schwenkte die Kamera auf dem Stativ in Richtung Paulista Av. und öffnete das Objektiv für ca. 30 Sekunden. Fertig!

I would have liked to play a bit more with the zoom. Unfortunately, time was too short for that. So there is still something to do for the next visit here in Sao Paulo. Above is the view from the hotel. Below I show the set. Now the journey continues to Santa Catarina. From there I will report again next Sunday about my light painting adventures. Stay tuned!
Gern hätte ich noch etwas mit dem Zoom gespielt. Leider war die Zeit dafür zu knapp. Also gibt es noch etwas für den nächsten Besuch hier in Sao Paulo zu tun. Oben ist die Aussicht vom Hotel zu sehen. Unten zeige ich das Set. Jetzt geht die Reise weiter nach Santa Catarina. What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.
Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.

Wow brother, you really are a photography lover! I really admire that you managed to take such good captures despite the opinion you have about the city, it means you have a lot of talent. Even so, what I loved the most was what you achieved with the editing of the pictures, I love how they look with these effects, and not to mention the sky itself in the last image where we can see you working, everything combined to perfection for you to share with us a great job. I loved reading and seeing the pictures in your post, bravo!...

Thank you for your comment. Art is an expression of feelings and impressions. At the moment, that's exactly how I feel about Sao Paulo, what the pictures show. It was different once and it can change again. It's nice that you obviously see it differently at the moment. Everyone is free to do that and I accept that.
