Light Painting In Paraty (Brazil)

After about 25 years, I finally visited Paraty again,
a charming colonial town in the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
Paraty has an almost completely preserved historical architecture from the 17th century and is therefore a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is surrounded by the Atlantic rainforest with several waterfalls and the Atlantic coast with many islands and diving paradises.

Nach ca. 25 Jahren besuchte ich endlich wieder Paraty,
eine charmante Kolonialstadt im Bundesstaat Rio de Janeiro in Brasilien.
Paraty besitzt eine fast vollständig erhaltene historische Architektur aus dem 17. Jahrhundert und gehört deshalb zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Umgeben ist die Stadt vom Atlantikregenwald mit einigen Wasserfällen und der Atlantikküste mit vielen Inseln und Taucherparadiesen.

After unloading the luggage from the car, I grabbed my camera and explored the town in the hot midday sun. Paraty was almost deserted. The residents preferred to enjoy themselves on the beach.
Only the restaurants were being prepared by the staff for the evening influx of tourists.

Nachdem ich das Gepäck aus dem Auto geladen habe, schnappte ich mir meine Kamera und erkundete die Stadt in der heißen Mittagssonne. Paraty war fast menschenleer. Die Bewohner vergnügten sich lieber am Strand.
Nur die Restaurants wurden durch die Angestellten auf den abendlichen Touristenstrom vorbereitet.

At night, the city is well lit. Light painting is hardly possible in these lighting conditions. The restaurants are usually busy until late at night. You might as well do light painting in daylight. In the end, I decided to create an image for my ‘Target’ series.

The next day, I positioned myself in front of the church ‘Nossa Senhora das Dores’, built in 1800.

For this, I mounted an ND1000 filter in front of the lens. The camera was mounted on a gimbal, which was mounted on a tripod. I held a torch about 30 cm in front of the camera, rotated it 360° and then let the exposure continue. I had used this technique before and described it here:

Nachts wird die Stadt gut beleuchtet. Lightpainting ist bei diesen Lichtverhältnissen kaum möglich. Die Restaurants sind meist noch bis spät in die Nacht gut besucht. Da könnte man auch gleich ein Lightpainting bei Tageslicht machen. Letztendlich entschied ich mich auch dafür, ein Bild für meine Serie „Target“ zu kreieren. Am nächsten Tag positionierte ich mich dafür vor der im Jahr 1800 erbauten Kirche „Nossa Senhora das Dores“.
Dafür montierte ich einen ND1000 Filter vor das Objektiv. Die Kamera war auf einen Gimbal befestigt, der auf einem Stativ stand. Ich hielt eine Taschenlampe ca. 30cm vor die Kamera, drehte diese 360° und ließ die Belichtung danach weiter laufen. Ich hatte diese Technik schon einmal angewendet und hier beschrieben:

Because the city of Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay is very similar to the Brazilian city of Paraty, I created a light painting with some lettering during my visit to Colonia, which fits very well with today's theme. The picture below shows Colonia del Sacramento.

Weil die Stadt Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay der brasilianischen Stadt Paraty sehr ähnelt, hatte ich während meines damaligen Besuches in Colonia aus Spaß ein Lightpainting mit einem Schriftzug kreiert, der heute sehr gut zum Thema passt. Auf dem Bild unten ist Colonia del Sacramento zu sehen.

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.
Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
