It snowed again last night. At breakfast the sun shone into the living room. We couldn't resist. I packed my camera backpack, took two tripods and a mirror with me and we hiked into the Teutoburg Forest. We stopped just a few hundred meters behind our house, on Buss-Berg, to position the tripods. After the first two light paintings in daylight at Tatenhausen Castle, I still had an unrealized idea for a picture that I wanted to implement today. Letzte Nacht hat es bei uns wieder geschneit. Beim Frühstück schien uns die Sonne ins Wohnzimmer. Da konnten wir nicht widerstehen. Ich packte mein Kamerarucksack, nahm zwei Stative und einen Spiegel mit und wir wanderten in den Teutoburger Wald. Schon wenige hundert Meter hinter unserem Haus, am Buss-Berg, stoppten wir, um die Stative in Position zu bringen. Nach den ersten beiden Lightpaintings bei Tageslicht am Schloss Tatenhausen, hatte ich noch eine unverwirklichte Bildidee, die ich heute umsetzen wollte. The Idea

The idea was not just to paint one circle in the picture, but several, like on a target. The set was the same as described in the above two posts. Using a clamp on a ball head mounted on a tripod, I clamped a mirror tile and placed it so the sun's rays projected directly onto the lens. In the cover image, I gradually adjusted the zoom lens to 16mm, 24mm and 35mm while rotating the camera around the optical axis. While adjusting the lens, I covered it with my hat. At a focal length of 16mm, I removed the tripod with the mirror from the scene and exposed it for another minute.
Die Idee war es nicht nur einen Kreis ins Bild zu malen, sondern wie auf einer Zielscheibe, mehrere. Das Set war das Gleiche wie in den beiden oben genannten Beiträgen beschrieben. Mit Hilfe einer Klemme auf einem Kugelkopf, der sich auf einem Stativ befand, spannte ich eine Spiegelfliese ein und platzierte sie so, dass sich die Sonnenstrahlen direkt auf das Objektiv projizierte. Im Titelbild Stellte ich das Zoomobjektiv stufenweise auf 16mm, 24mm und 35mm während ich die Kamera um die optische Achse rotierte. Während der Einstellarbeiten am Objektiv deckte ich dieses mit meiner Mütze ab. Bei einer Brennweite von 16mm beseitigte ich das Stativ mit dem Spiegel aus der Szene und belichtete sie für eine weitere Minute.

The trick to this technique is to rotate the camera slowly and evenly. In the picture above, the lines are partially blurred and the mirror can be seen at the start and end points. That wasn't the plan.
Der Trick an dieser Technik ist es, die Kamera langsam und gleichmäßig zu rotieren. In dem Bild oben sind die Linien teilweise verwischt und am Anfangs- und Endpunkt ist der Spiegel zu sehnen. Das war nicht der Plan.

Here I wanted to achieve a tube effect. The setting of the focal length did not work out as evenly as I would have liked. Maybe it will be a later project. I like the three circles in the cover picture better. Less is more.
Hier wollte ich einen Röhreneffekt erzielen. Die Einstellung der Brennweite ist mir hier nicht so gleichmäßig gelungen wie gewünscht. Vielleicht wird es mal ein späteres Projekt. Die drei Kreise im Titelbild finde ich besser. Weniger ist mehr.

In the image above, I centered the mirror again to project the "target point". Geane covered the lens while I aligned the mirror.
Im obigen Bild setzte ich den Spiegel noch einmal auf den Mittelpunkt, um den "Zielpunkt" zu projizieren. Geane deckte das Objektiv ab, während ich den Spiegel ausrichtete.

The Location

At 11:00 a.m. the temperature was already 5°C. The slush and drops of water fell from the trees onto the camera. I had to constantly remove the water from the ND filters. So we decided to end the action and go home. I captured a few impressions of the snowmelt on the way with my smartphone.
Um 11:00 Uhr war die Temperatur schon bei 5°C. Von den Bäumen fiel der Schneematsch und die Wassertropfen auf die Kamera. Die ND-Filter musste ich ständig vom Wasser befreien. Also beschlossen wir, die Aktion zu beenden und uns in Richtung Heimat zu bewegen. Ein paar Impressionen von der Schneeschmelze fing ich auf dem Weg noch mit dem Smartphone ein.

Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.

Irgendwann muss ich das auch mal probieren 🤩
Ich find das richtig cool was du hier zeigst. Ich hatte das mal vor ein paar Jahren einfach mal kurz probiert habe es aber leider nicht wirklich weiter verfolgt. Das inspiriert das Thema doch nochmal etwas zu verfolgen.

Do you think a normal tripod would work for this? Obviously one could not do circles, but dots and streaks could be possible, correct? Just use a low ISO with several filters?

Yes, it is! Of course you have to use ND filters.

Ok that's pretty badass - I gave it a try with sparklers last winter, as people tend to do - didn't go well haha, but still looked cool. This on the other hand looks like a genuine portal or something.

Can you, in principle, go beyond simple circles but more complex images by way of moving the camera around a track or something?
