Light Painting At Starry Night

Hello HIVEs!

On Friday, Geane and me headed to Gartow, a small town on the Elbe, to meet up with Hans, Ramona and @Stepko for light painting. There, at the end of the biotope on the L 258, is a circle of piles made of tree trunks. It is easy to reach by car and you can park right next to the circle. I had chosen the place on the Light Pollution Map. The aim was to bring the Milky Way into the picture.

Freitag machten Geane und ich uns auf den Weg nach Gartow, einen kleinen Ort an der Elbe, um uns mit Hans, Ramona und @Stepko zum Lightpainting zu treffen. Dort befindet sich am Ende des Biotopes an der L 258 ein Pfahlkreis aus Baumstämmen. Man kann den Ort gut mit dem Auto zu erreichen und direkt neben dem Pfahlkreis parken. Den Ort hatte ich auf der Light-Pollution-Map ausgesucht. Ziel war es, die Milchstrasse ins Bild zu bringen.

The Milky Way

Since the stars should not appear as traces in the picture, we did not have much time to realise the picture idea. So the cover picture was created in teamwork. Hans pressed the shutter release of the camera and immediately started illuminating the poles with the help of an Emisar D4V2. I had already positioned myself and shone a NOCTIGON DM11 into the sky. Stepko brought me into the picture with an Emisar D18. The whole performance lasted 47 seconds.

Da die Sterne nicht als Spuren im Bild erscheinen sollten, hatten wir nicht viel Zeit für die Umsetzung der Bildidee. Somit entstand das Titelbild im Teamwork. Hans betätigte den Auslöser der Kamera und begann sofort mit Ausleuchtung der Pfähle mit Hilfe einer Emisar D4V2. Ich hatte mich vorher schon in Position gebracht und leuchtete mit einer NOCTIGON DM11 in den Himmel. Stepko brachte mich mit einer Emisar D18 ins Bild. Die ganze Performance dauerte 47 Sekunden.

Zuvor machte ich ein paar Probeaufnahmen, um die Ausleuchtung des Pfahlkreises im Zusammenspiel mit der Milchstrasse zu testen. In der folgenden Aufnahme hatte ich das Glück, eine Sternschnuppe der Perseiden einzufangen. Auf dem Bild kreuzt sie die Milchstraße.

The Star Trails

Now all that was missing was a few star trails. For the following image, I pointed the camera in the direction of the North Star. After the shutter was released, I illuminated the pole circle from the inside with an Emisar D18. The exposure time was over 20 minutes.

Jetzt fehlte nur noch ein paar Sternenspuren. Für das folgende Bild habe ich die Kamera in Richtung Nordstern ausgerichtet.
Nachdem der Auslöser betätigt wurde, habe ich den Pfahlkreis von innen mit einer Emisar D18 ausgeleuchtet. Die Belichtungszeit betrug über 20 Minuten.

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
