El Eden - First Night - Milky Way and Star Trails - Photography

Like in promised in my last post, I'll report today about the El Eden location in Uruguay. We started our trip through South America in Sao Paulo. From there we drove south in an all-terrain vehicle. We spent a few days on our tour in different places in Santa Catarina. I would like to report on that later. Our destination was Montevideo in Uruguay. Arrived in Uruguay, we spent the first night in El EDEN.
Wie im letzten Post versprochen, berichte ich heute über die Location El Eden in Uruguay. Unseren Trip durch Südamerika starteten wir in Sao Paulo. Von dort fuhren wir mit einem geländegängigen Fahrzeug Richtung Süden. Einige Tage verbrachten wir auf unserer Tour an verschiedenen Orten in Santa Catarina. Darüber möchte ich später berichten. Ziel unserer Reise war Montevideo in Uruguay. In Uruguay angekommen, verbrachten wir die erste Nacht in El EDEN.

El Eden

El Eden is a village in Uruguay. There you can let your gaze wander far over the hilly landscape. In Uruguay there are twice as many cattle as people. In other words: I did not meet anyone here on the day of arrival. Instead, a few cattle that graze the pastures here in peace. As soon as we arrived, Rodrigo and I unpacked the cameras and immediately checked out the area. An Eldorado for photography and light painting!
El Eden ist ein Dorf in Uruguay. Dort kann man den Blick weit über die hügelige Landschaft schweifen lassen. In Uruguay gibt es doppelt so viel Rinder wie Menschen. Mit anderen Worten: Ich habe hier am Tag der Anreise keinen Menschen angetroffen. Dafür ein paar Rinder, die hier in ruhe die Weiden abgrasen. Gerade angekommen, packten Rodrigo und ich die Kameras aus und checkten sofort die Umgebung. Ein Eldorado zum Fotografieren und Lightpainten!

We cannot implement all ideas in the short time that we will be here. So on the first night we worked with two cameras at the same time. While one camera was recording startrails, the other was capturing a light painting performance.
Wir können in der kurzen Zeit, die wir hier verbringen werden, nicht alle Ideen umsetzen. Also arbeiteten wir in der ersten Nacht mit zwei Kameras gleichzeitig. Während eine Kamera Startrails aufzeichnet, nahm die andere eine Performance beim Lightpainting auf.

The night was clear and the surroundings dark, the moon shone brightly until about 1 a.m. and the galactic center was below the horizon. Suboptimal conditions to capture the Milky Way on camera. But there is always something. First I chose a tree in the foreground and opened the lens at f/2.8 for 15 seconds at ISO 3200. That worked quite well. In the next picture I used an EMISAR DM11 to lighten the tree a bit. After that I tried the whole thing again at ISO 64 and 1400 seconds to capture some startrails.
Die Nacht war klar und die Umgebung dunkel, der Mond schien bis circa 1 Uhr Morgens hell und das galaktische Zentrum befand sich unterhalb des Horizontes. Suboptimale Bedingungen, um die Milchstraße mit der Kamera einzufangen. Aber irgendwas ist ja immer. Zuerst suchte ich mir einen Baum als Vordergrund und öffnete die Linse bei Blende 2.8 für 15 Sekunden bei ISO 3200. Das klappte schon ganz gut. Im nächsten Bild setzte ich eine EMISAR DM11 ein, um dem Baum etwas aufzuhellen. Danach versuchte ich das Ganze nochmal bei ISO 64 und 1400 Sekunden , um ein paar Startrails einzufangen.

Next, I switched locations to capture a cluster of trees with the Milky Way. You can see that in the picture below. Something always got in the way. It was not possible to record the group of trees solo. So I tried the whole thing again with only the house (title picture). I lit it up with my headlamp. Shake your head once done. 😉 That was the shortest light painting ever! 🤣
Als nächstes wechselte ich den Standort, um eine Baumgruppe mit der Milchstraße abzulichten. Das seht ihr im Bild unten. Irgendwie stand immer etwas im Weg. Die Baumgruppe solo aufnehmen ging nicht. Also versuchte ich das ganze nochmal nur mit dem Haus (Titelbild). Das habe ich mit meiner Stirnlampe angeleuchtet. Einmal Kopfschütteln fertig. 😉 Das war das kürzeste Lightpainting ever! 🤣

Finally, I show the location in daylight. If you like it quiet, stay here for a longer time. I fell a bit in love with El Eden.
Zum Schluss zeige ich die Location bei Tageslicht. Wer es ruhig mag, hält es hier für längere Zeit aus. Ein bisschen habe ich mich in El Eden verliebt.

Nächsten Sonntag zeige ich an dieser Stelle eine ungewöhnliche Entdeckung, die ich an diesem Ort machte. Also bleibt dran und bleibt kreativ!

Sehr schöne Ergenisse Ralf. Der Himmel, so ganz ohne Lichtverschmutzung sieht ja traumhaft aus und an der Location könnte ich es auch aushalten. 😊

Danke Stefan! Das war erst der erste Eindruck. Wenn Rodrigo endlich die Bilder von seiner Kamera geladen hat (er hatte das Kabel vergessen), kann ich den Rest posten. Für die nächsten 4 Posts ist aber auch noch genug Material in meiner Olympus. 😉

Yes, the star trail and milky way shots are the best when they work out. I bet it's tough to get it all right for those shots. I am sure you will get it up to your standards in time!

An excellent photographic work, what a beautiful sky to observe and enjoy... There is very little visual pollution there and you have made a great selection of photos to take advantage of this... Thank you for sharing with us!...

Thanks very much! Yes, the sky was very clear. Unfortunately, the moon from the other side interfered a bit. I wanted to show the Milky Way better, unfortunately that wasn't possible that night, although the location was perfect.

They are majestic images, I tried to take this kind of pictures in the city where I live, but I don't have good results because of the light pollution. I will have to take a trip to a more isolated place.

Yes such a secluded place is perfect. Then it should still be new moon and the galactic center should be visible. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case with this shoot. It takes patience and luck. Photopills and the Light Pollution Map (LPM) app are my helpers.
