There’s Room at the Back

Hello dear Black and White community,

A phrase you’ll often hear on Lima’s buses (we call them micros): “¡Al fondo hay sitio!” “There’s room at the back!”. The same thing always happens: everyone gathers near the front because when it’s time to get off, nobody wants to fight their way through the sea of bodies. You end up sliding through as if covered in butter, pressed between backs, sweat, and skin sometimes even your feet lift off the ground.

This series is part of my public transport project. I usually take long rides, so I always head to the very back. At first it feels calm with just a few passengers, but little by little every space fills up. Even those improvised seats appear, the ones we’ve all used at some point (me included).

I hope you enjoy these images. All my work is done with good vibes, trying to show that despite the difficulties, there’s always a way to keep moving forward.

Al fondo hay sitio

Hola querida comunidad en Blanco y Negro,

Una frase popular en los micros (así llamamos al transporte público en Lima): “¡Al fondo hay sitio!”. Siempre pasa lo mismo, todos se amontonan adelante porque a la hora de bajar nadie quiere abrirse paso entre el mar de cuerpos. Terminas deslizándote como si te hubieras bañado en mantequilla, sumergido entre espaldas, sudor, piel con piel… hay momentos en los que hasta los pies se despegan del suelo.

Esta serie es parte de mi proyecto sobre el transporte público. Acá retrato a las personas desde mi sitio. Yo suelo hacer viajes largos, así que casi siempre me voy al fondo, donde empieza tranquilo con pocos pasajeros, pero con el tiempo se va llenando cada espacio. Incluso aparece ese asiento improvisado que todos, alguna vez, hemos aprovechado (yo también).

Espero que disfruten estas imágenes. Todo mi trabajo lo hago con buenas vibras, intentando mostrar que, pese a las dificultades, siempre hay una manera de seguir remando hacia adelante.
