The Sacred Head: Hiking the Andes / La Cabeza Sagrada: Caminando Los Andes [Eng-Esp]

Hello dear Black and White community,

I always have series to show from my beloved Cusco. I have so much material that it makes me nostalgic not to share it, and it’s time to refresh things. Soon, I’ll attend a good friend’s wedding there and travel, so I’ll come back with much more experience as a street photographer.

Before, I only took landscape photos that was what I was most passionate about and trekking, one of the sports I practice, connects a lot with landscape photography.

So, enough talk, now I take you to Humantay Lake, which means “Sacred Head” in Quechua and is located at the edge of the mountain with the same name. It is one of the most important Apus (mountains in Quechua) in Andean culture and provides water to many communities.

It’s about 123 kilometers from the center of Cusco, around 3–4 hours by car or bus, depending on the weather. If it rains, it might take longer. The hike starts from the village of Soraypampa, at 3,850 meters above sea level. That’s where the fun begins, the part I love. I have “Inca lungs,” so I walk as usual, at the pace of the locals, chewing coca leaves to give me strength.

It’s tough if you’re not used to high altitudes, but there’s the option to ride a horse. The hike is around 7 kilometers round trip; the way up takes at least 2 hours, and the way back is a bit faster because it’s downhill. Trust me, it’s worth it.

At the start of the hike, you mostly see green mountains surrounding you, but as you enter the path and start ascending, the majesty of the snow-capped mountain begins to appear. It’s epic: white, growing bigger and bigger until you see it fully. Looking down, you find a turquoise-colored lake.

Well, the photos are in black and white. If you’ve made it this far, imagine the colors and then look them up online to admire them. But in black and white, the details and contrasts speak for themselves.

The trip is exhausting, and you just want to stay there as long as possible to enjoy it. Since it’s a popular place, you’ll find many tour groups. I wish I could go someday and have it all to myself. It’s hard to get a clean photo or relax for a moment, but it’s worth it.

Humantay is a must see place on your list, but like everything, it has to end. Returning is tough. For those who can sleep on the road, believe me, you’ll manage because you’ll be super tired. For me, with light sleep, it’s a punishment: a winding road with cliffs that make your life flash before your eyes. Still, you arrive safe and sound.

Hola querida comunidad en Blanco y Negro

Siempre tengo series que mostrar de mi Cusco querido. Tengo tanto material que me da nostalgia no compartirlo, y ya es momento de renovar. Pronto tendré un matrimonio de un buen amigo por allá y viajaré, así que regresaré cargado con mucha más experiencia como fotógrafo de calle.

Antes solo tomaba fotos a paisajes, era lo que más me apasionaba, y bueno, el trekking uno de los deportes que practico se enlaza mucho con la fotografía de paisajes.

Si tanto palabreo, ahora los llevo a la laguna de Humantay, que significa en quechua “Cabeza Sagrada” y está a la orilla del nevado que tiene el mismo nombre. Es uno de los Apus (montaña en quechua) más importantes de la cultura andina y provee agua a muchas comunidades.

Se ubica a 123 kilómetros del centro de Cusco, unas 3–4 horas en auto o bus, depende del clima. Si te coge lluvia, tal vez tome más. La caminata empieza desde el pueblo de Soraypampa, a 3850 metros de altura. Ahí empieza lo bueno, lo que me encanta. Yo tengo pulmones de inca, así que voy andando como siempre, al ritmo de los papichos y mascando hoja de coca para que dé poder.

Es pesado si no tienes costumbre de la altura, pero hay opción de ir a caballo también. Son alrededor de 7 kilómetros de caminata ida y vuelta; la ida toma unas 2 horas mínimo y la vuelta es algo más rápida porque es bajada. Créame que vale la pena.

Al empezar la caminata, lo usual son montañas verdes que te rodean, pero poco a poco, entrando en el camino y empezando a subir, empieza a aparecer la majestuosidad del nevado. Es épico: blanco que cada vez se hace más grande, hasta que llegas a verlo por completo. Al bajar la mirada, te encuentras con una laguna color turquesa.

Bueno, las fotos están en blanco y negro. Si llegaron hasta aquí, imagínenla y luego busquen en la web para admirar sus colores. Pero en blanco y negro se aprecia de una manera pura: los detalles y contrastes hablan solos.

El viaje es pesado y solo te quieres quedar ahí todo el tiempo posible para poder disfrutarlo. Como es un lugar popular, te encuentras con muchos grupos de tours. Desearía ir algún día y tenerlo solo para mí. Es difícil sacar una foto limpia o relajarte un momento, pero vale la pena.

Humantay es un lugar fijo en la lista de lo que debes conocer, pero, como todo, tiene que terminar. Es duro volver. Para quienes pueden dormir en carretera, créanme que podrán hacerlo porque estarán súper cansados. Para mí, que tengo el sueño ligero, es un castigo: una serpiente de curvas con un abismo que hace pasar toda tu vida por la mente. Igual llegas sano y salvo.
