Lima's Culture / Cultura Limeña

In Lima, the capital of Peru, there is a mix of cultures shaped by a rich history, reflected in the physical traits and clothing of its people. Here, I bring you a little bit of the national reality that we experience daily in my city: the street vendors and the bus rides, which we call "micros."

Although the transport system has evolved, it still faces challenges in such an overcrowded city as Lima. We have five main ways of traveling, not counting taxis (which use apps and those that pass by informally).

For mass transportation, we have the "corredores" (bus routes) with payment by card, the metro (which is still developing and only reaches some districts, not mine), the micros, the combis, the mototaxis (known as tuk-tuks in some countries), and the colectivos (informal cars that take a limited number of passengers).

It's chaotic at times, and your safety can be at risk, but we must move forward. With this, I don’t want to say that everything is wrong; I just want to show the reality of a country where informality sometimes rules, but we also feed it out of necessity. In a corrupt state without scruples, people must find ways to get ahead. It is painful and unfair, but it is what we have. I hope these photos help you learn a little more about my city and that you like them.

Cultura Limeña / Lima's Culture

En Lima, la capital del Perú, tenemos una mezcla de culturas que nos une una historia muy rica, y eso lo vemos reflejado en los rasgos físicos y vestimentas de su gente.

Aquí les traigo un poco de la realidad nacional que vivimos día a día en mi ciudad: los vendedores ambulantes y los viajes en buses, que acá llamamos “micros.”

Aunque el sistema de transporte ha evolucionado, aún enfrenta desafíos en una ciudad tan sobrepoblada como Lima, tenemos 5 tipos de formas de viajar sin contar los taxis por aplicativos y de la calle esos que pasan algunos formales, pero para transporte en masas, hay los corredores, pagos con tarjeta, el metro que aún está empezando y pasa por algunos distritos, no todos; por ejemplo, el mío no, los micros, las combis, los mototaxis conocidos en algunos países como tuk tuk y los colectivos, una especie de autos informales que llevan un grupo limitado de personas.

Todo es un caos, a veces uno está en peligro de su integridad, pero hay que avanzar.

Con esto no quiero decir que todo esté mal, solo que muestro una realidad en la que vive un país donde a veces la informalidad reina, pero también nosotros la alimentamos por necesidad. En un estado corrupto y sin escrúpulos, la gente tiene que agenciarse como sea para salir adelante. Es doloroso e injusto, pero es lo que hay. Espero que estas fotos les ayuden a conocer un poco más mi ciudad y sean de su agrado.
