Life in the Bridges / La Vida en los Puentes

Migration from the Andean regions to the capital is extreme, and the result — in about 70% of cases — looks like this: a reflection of deep poverty. People leave their lands, their healthy and peaceful lives, for a better future. I understand them. But what they find instead is a city full of indifference, prejudice, and racism.

Pedestrian bridges become their homes, not even the rain stops them. Through my photographs, what I want most is to bring awareness — to show what life is like in places such as Peru: very harsh, it hits you, it turns you into stone.

Imagine climbing every bridge, walking through the streets, seeing people suffer, wanting to help everyone but being unable to, swallowing that bitter taste of indifference. I’ve always believed indifference — that silent treatment — is the worst punishment you can give someone. But we learned to be indifferent, cruel, to ignore and normalize these realities.

So whenever you can, stop for a moment. If you don’t have money, there is something that always fills the heart more than pockets: a beautiful smile, a hug, or a simple phrase like EVERYTHING WILL BE OK.

La Vida en los Puentes / Life in the Bridges

La migración de pueblos andinos a la capital es extrema, y el resultado en su 70% es este: parte de la pobreza extrema. Dejan sus tierras, su vida sana y llena de paz por un mejor futuro. Los entiendo. Pero se encuentran con un monstruo lleno de indiferencia, prejuicios y racismo.

Los puentes peatonales se convierten en sus hogares, ni la lluvia los detiene. Con mis fotografías lo que más busco es tomar conciencia, mostrar cómo es la vida en lugares como Perú: muy dura, te azota, te vuelve de piedra.

Se imaginan subir cada puente, caminar por las calles, ver a la gente sufrir y no poder ayudar a todos, tragarse ese sabor amargo de la indiferencia. Siempre pensé que la indiferencia, ese silencio, es el peor castigo que le puedes dar a alguien. Pero hemos aprendido a ser indiferentes, crueles, a ignorar y normalizar estas cosas.

Por eso, cada vez que puedan, deténganse. Si no tienen dinero, hay algo que llena más el corazón que los bolsillos: una hermosa sonrisa, un abrazo, o una frase como TODO VA A ESTAR BIEN.
