Kiosko House / Life in a Cubicle

Hello dear Black and White community,

In this post I want to show a bit of the kioskos, those small spaces that become the livelihood of many families. People spending hours sometimes more than 15 inside a 5x5 cubicle. Some sell candies, others duplicate keys… but all of them, in one way or another, live locked inside that square.

Today, while taking photos, I couldn’t help but think: it must be stressful to be there all day, but at the same time it’s work, and it’s a dignified effort. Life is tough, and many times we don’t realize how fortunate we are with what we have.

Sometimes we live like hamsters in a cage, without noticing. Trapped in our homes, or moving only within a tiny routine, a kilometer around. The pandemic also left that: working from home. I used to go to the agency every single day; now I only go when there are meetings (if they aren’t virtual). I used to go with excitement, now I do with a bit of laziness.

I have everything I need nearby: the gym, the market… but photography forces me to move, to search for new places. And that’s a gift.

But back to the point: kioskos are shops that never expire, that even big department stores can’t beat. In this series I also included a man who shouted at me angrily for taking his photo he followed me with his gaze until I disappeared, hahahaha and even tricycles turned into shops.

That’s my Peru: when there’s no support, people find a way and push forward with what they have.

Kiosko House / La vida en un cubículo

Un Día Intenso en la Ciudad

Hola querida comunidad en Blanco y Negro,

En este post quiero mostrar un poco de los kioskos, esos pequeños espacios que se convierten en el sustento de muchas familias. Personas que pasan horas, incluso más de 15, dentro de un cubículo de 5x5. Algunos venden golosinas, otros duplican llaves… pero todos, de una u otra forma, viven encerrados en ese cuadrado.

Hoy, mientras hacía fotos, me puse a pensar: debe ser muy estresante estar ahí todo el día, pero al mismo tiempo es un trabajo y un esfuerzo digno. La vida es dura, y muchas veces no vemos lo afortunados que somos con lo que tenemos.

A veces vivimos como hámsters en una jaula, sin darnos cuenta. Encerrados en casa, o moviéndonos solo dentro de una rutina de un kilómetro a la redonda. La pandemia también dejó eso: el trabajo en casa. Yo antes iba todos los días a la agencia; ahora voy solo a reuniones (cuando no son virtuales). Antes lo hacía con entusiasmo, ahora con algo de pereza.

Todo lo que necesito lo tengo a la mano: el gym, el mercado… pero la fotografía me obliga a moverme, a buscar nuevos lugares. Y eso es un regalo.

No quiero desviarme: los kioskos son tiendas que nunca caducan, que ni las grandes tiendas por departamento logran tumbar. Incluí también en la serie a un señor que me gritó con odio por tomarle una foto me siguió con la mirada hasta perderme, jajajaja— y hasta triciclos convertidos en tiendas.

Así es mi Perú: a falta de apoyo, la gente se la busca y sale adelante con lo que tiene.
