Echoes of the Ancients in Monochrome: Maras Salt Pans and the Legacy of White Gold

Hello, Black and White community!

This time, we return to one of my favorite places on the planet. From the depths of the Peruvian Andes, in the heart of the Sacred Valley, today I want to share with you the breathtaking beauty of the Maras Salt Pans. This impressive site is located near the picturesque town of Maras, approximately 1 to 1.5 hours from the historic city of Cusco, and at about 3200 meters (around 10,500 feet) above sea level. With nearly 3000 saltwater pools, these salt pans are the source of some of the most natural salts you can find.

This is a place where ancient history and nature intertwine magically, a true gem that fascinates me to capture, especially through the timeless lens of black and white.

My decision to present these images in monochrome is no coincidence. Without color, the intricate patterns of the 3000 salt pools emerge with astonishing clarity. The textures and geometric lines they generate, along with the dramatic play of light and shadow under the Andean sky, acquire compositions and contrasts that, frankly, I absolutely loved. Each salt pool tells an ancestral story, a legacy of generations who have cultivated this "white gold" of the Inca Empire.

In this series, I've aimed not only to document a landscape but to evoke the essence of Maras: its silent grandeur, the arduous labor of its people, and the persistence of their traditions. You will see how the immensity of the Apus (mountains in Quechua) embraces this mosaic of salt, and how life, in its most everyday forms, continues its course amidst such beauty.

I hope these photographs transport you to this unique corner of our Andes and allow you to feel the same admiration I experienced while taking these images. It is always a joy for me to showcase a little more of my beautiful country, Peru.

Esta vez volvemos a uno de mis lugares favoritos del planeta. Desde las profundidades de los Andes peruanos, en el corazón del Valle Sagrado, hoy quiero compartir con ustedes la sobrecogedora belleza de las Salineras de Maras. Este impresionante lugar se encuentra cerca del pintoresco pueblo de Maras, a aproximadamente 1 a 1.5 horas de la histórica ciudad de Cusco, y a unos 3200 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Con cerca de 3000 pozos de agua salada, estas salineras son la fuente de una de las sales más naturales que se pueden encontrar.

Este es un lugar donde la historia milenaria y la naturaleza se entrelazan de forma mágica, una joya que me fascina capturar, especialmente bajo la lente atemporal del blanco y negro.

La decisión de presentar estas imágenes en monocromo no es casual. Sin el color, los patrones intrincados de los 3000 pozos de sal emergen con una claridad asombrosa. Las texturas y las líneas geométricas que generan, junto con el juego dramático de luces y sombras bajo el cielo andino, adquieren unas composiciones y contrastes que, sinceramente, me encantaron. Cada pozo de sal cuenta una historia ancestral, un legado de generaciones que han cultivado este "oro blanco" del Imperio Inca.

En esta serie, he buscado no solo documentar un paisaje, sino evocar la esencia de Maras: su grandeza silenciosa, la ardua labor de sus gentes y la persistencia de sus tradiciones. Verán cómo la inmensidad de los Apus (montañas en quechua) abraza este mosaico de sal, y cómo la vida, en sus formas más cotidianas, sigue su curso en medio de tanta belleza.

Espero que estas fotografías les transporten a este rincón único de nuestros Andes y les permitan sentir la misma admiración que yo experimenté al tomar estas imágenes. Siempre para mí es una alegría mostrar un poco más de mi hermoso país, Perú.
