Cusco: Therapy and New Horizons / Cusco: Terapia y Nuevos Horizontes

_{Composition and rhythm: The renewal of my documentary vision in the Andes.}

Photography and the streets of Cusco are therapy for me; being there these days has made me feel renewed. I’ve been learning to crop properly in a course I took; they taught me to keep only what is important. Sometimes we close the frame to focus on facial expressions, or we place a person crossing the background in a third of the photograph, and everything begins to have rhythm. March has started, a difficult month in Lima with the summer I always try to avoid. Now classes begin—the nerves are there, even if it seems silly to return to the classroom at 42, but it’s about fulfilling a dream of graduating as a photographer. I have a year and a half left. My goal is to work as a documentary photographer for an NGO or, more ambitiously, for the Ministry of Culture to document communities in the interior of the country. I hope to achieve this; right now, I’m on this project about Cusco communities and Takanakuy, hoping it opens doors to new adventures.

La fotografía y las calles de Cusco son una terapia para mí; estar allí estos días me ha hecho sentir renovado. He estado aprendiendo a reencuadrar (crop) correctamente en un curso que llevé; me enseñaron a quedarme con lo importante. A veces cerramos el plano y nos quedamos con la expresión del rostro, o colocamos a la persona que cruza por el fondo en un tercio de la fotografía y todo empieza a tener ritmo. Ya empezó marzo, un mes difícil en Lima por el verano que siempre trato de evitar. Ahora empiezo clases—los nervios están ahí, aunque parezca tonto regresar a las aulas a los 42 años, pero es para cumplir el sueño de titularme como fotógrafo. Me falta un año y medio. Mi propósito es entrar a trabajar como fotógrafo documental en alguna ONG o, siendo más ambicioso, al Ministerio de Cultura para documentar las comunidades del interior del país. Espero poder cumplirlo; ahora estoy en este proyecto de Cusco, comunidades y de Takanakuy, esperando que esto me abra las puertas a nuevas aventuras.
