Cusco in Black and White: Temples, Locks, and Stone Echoes – Part 2 Cusco en Blanco y Negro: Templos, Candados y Ecos de Piedra – Parte 2
(Eng) Hello dear Black and White community,
Here I bring you Part 2 of one of my many trips to the city of Cusco. I always try to capture the essence of the place, and something that really catches my attention is how you don’t need to walk far to find a photo. Every step you take reveals something you want to immortalize.
I started my walk along Avenida El Sol. I used to walk there every day when leaving my Airbnb, and right on the way I’d come across the Temple of Coricancha or Qorikancha (in Quechua: Quri Kancha, “golden courtyard”), which was the most important temple during the Inca Empire, just two blocks away from the Main Square.
As I reached the Plaza Mayor, I was greeted by the impressive Cathedral of Cusco, the city’s main temple. That day, I also met up with a good friend, Alberto. While he went to withdraw money from the ATM, I waited outside and managed to capture two photos I really love: one of a mamicha (Andean woman) carrying her baby alpaca on her back using a Lliclla (traditional Andean cloth), and another of a couple admiring the grandeur of the Plaza.
As we kept walking, we noticed a protest had started. It was presidential election season, and a police blockade was set up. That pushed us to climb up to San Blas, one of my favorite neighborhoods. There, I noticed something beautiful: at the viewpoint, couples hang padlocks to seal their love a tradition you can find in many parts of the world.
On the way back, I found myself once again admiring the colonial doors and old locks of Cusco, which always capture my attention with their character and charm.
And with that, I close this little story from a magical place, full of symbols, energy, and memories. I truly hope that someday, you can all experience the wonder of Cusco for yourselves.
