Black Curls in Light / Rulos en la Luz [Eng–Esp]

This is my entry for the Monomad Challenge, hosted by @monochromes and @brumest

(English)

Hello, dear Black and White community!

In class, we had to work in groups, and I definitely wanted to work with Ana Cláudia. She gets kind of shy in front of the camera she’s like me, prefers being behind it. Though I ended up being her model too and I actually liked it, haha.

I was really into her curls. Her hair is super curly, beautiful, and has a lot of volume. From the very beginning, I was excited to try and capture that in a photo.

The background was black, which I thought was cool, but I also knew it would be tough to make her hair stand out. That was my biggest challenge making sure her curls didn’t get lost in the background, that they had presence, that they really popped.

We tried out a bunch of lighting setups: Rembrandt, broad, short, butterfly, split, and finally a fill light. The one I liked the most was Rembrandt it gave the face a lot of drama and depth. I think it would’ve looked even better with a stronger fill, but I still learned a lot and really liked how it turned out.

The craziest thing was that while I was taking the photos, I was already picturing them in black and white. In my mind, I was imagining uploading them to the MonoMad Challenge, because if I pulled it off, the texture of her hair would look amazing in grayscale. That thought hyped me up even more.

Thanks for being part of this ongoing #MonoMadChallenge adventure!
