A Day in Shades of Gray / Un Día en Tonalidades de Gris [Eng-Esp]

(Eng) Hello, dear Black and White community!

Today, my day began with the usual routine, but with the special mission of going for a check-up at the clinic. I prepared my backpack and, especially, my best friend: my Sony A7III. For a photographer like me, it's always an opportunity to find moments and scenes worthy of capturing, especially for my 'Monomad' series, which celebrates the charm of black and white in everyday life.

(Esp) Hola comunirad en Blanco y Negro!

Hoy, mi día comenzó con la usual rutina, pero con la misión especial de hacer un chequeo en la clínica. Preparé mi mochila y, en especial, a mi mejor amiga: mi Sony A7III. Para un fotógrafo como yo, siempre es una oportunidad para encontrar momentos y escenas dignas de capturar, especialmente para mi serie 'Monomad', que celebra el encanto del blanco y negro en la vida cotidiana.

(Eng) My first capture of the day came as I was heading to the clinic. I got on the bus or 'micro,' as we call it in Peru and went all the way to the back, finding myself in the middle of the view from my seat, looking down the aisle. The dim light inside contrasted with the brightness filtering in through the front windows, creating a tunnel of shadows and empty seats, or with a few scattered passengers. It was the perfect image of an ordinary journey in Lima, with that introspective atmosphere that only black and white can provide.

(Esp) Mi primera captura del día llegó mientras me dirigía a la clínica. Subí al autobús o 'micro', como lo llamamos en Perú y me fui hasta el fondo, encontrándome en medio de la vista desde mi asiento, mirando por el pasillo. La luz tenue del interior contrastaba con el brillo que se colaba por las ventanas del frente, creando un túnel de sombras y asientos vacíos, o con algunos pasajeros dispersos. Era la imagen perfecta de un viaje común y corriente en Lima, con esa atmósfera introspectiva que solo el blanco y negro puede dar.

(Eng) During my next transfer, while waiting for my second bus (or 'micro'), I looked up and saw a classic, yet always photogenic, scene that I captured: pigeons perched on the electricity wires. It's such a quintessential Lima sight, with those tangled knots of cables resembling spiderwebs against the clear sky, and the birds like musical notes on an urban staff. Below, the treetops and the silhouette of the hills surrounding La Molina could be discerned.

(Esp) En mi siguiente transbordo, mientras esperaba mi segundo autobús (o 'micro'), levanté la vista y vi una escena clásica, pero siempre fotogénica, que capturé: las palomas posadas en los cables de electricidad. Es una estampa tan limeña, con esos nudos de cables que parecen telarañas contra el cielo claro, y los pájaros como notas musicales sobre un pentagrama urbano. Abajo, se adivinaban las copas de los árboles y la silueta de los cerros que rodean La Molina.

(Eng) After traveling an hour to the clinic, I had to walk six blocks. Crossing a park, I came across a singular detail I couldn't ignore: on what appeared to be a concrete block or bench — I'm not sure what it actually was lay the melted remnants of a popsicle, in pieces, that must have fallen from some poor child. The organic shape and the black and white texture created a small visual mystery, an unexpected beauty in the mundane.

(Esp) Después de viajar una hora hasta la clínica, me tocó caminar seis cuadras. Cruzando un parque, me encontré con un detalle singular que no podía ignorar: sobre lo que parecía ser un bloque o una banca de concreto no estoy seguro de qué era exactamente yacían los restos derretidos de una paleta, en pedazos, que debió caérsele a algún niño. La forma orgánica y la textura en blanco y negro creaban un pequeño misterio visual, una belleza inesperada en lo mundano.

(Eng) A few steps further, in the same park, that little companion I always see around there crossed my path. A cat, with its curious eyes, stopped and looked directly at me. I didn't hesitate to capture it: its penetrating gaze and the way it blended with the blurred background of bushes and distant lights created a soulful portrait, highlighting the innocence and presence of animal life in our urban environment.

(Esp) Unos pasos más adelante, en el mismo parque, se me cruzó ese pequeño compañero que siempre veo por allí. Un gato, con sus ojos curiosos, se detuvo y me miró directamente. No dudé en capturarlo: su mirada penetrante y la forma en que se fundía con el fondo borroso de arbustos y luces distantes crearon un retrato lleno de alma, destacando la inocencia y la presencia de la vida animal en nuestro entorno urbano.

(Eng) As I crossed a street, my gaze stopped at a worn pedestrian signal. I immediately knew it was a good shot for 'Monomad,' so I captured the walking 'little man' sign. However, what really drew me in were the graffiti and scratches covering the surface of the sign and the button. It was a silent testament to the passage of time and the countless hands that have touched it.

(Esp) Al cruzar una calle, mi mirada se detuvo en un semáforo peatonal desgastado. Supe de inmediato que era una buena toma para 'Monomad', así que capturé la señal del 'hombrecito' caminando. Sin embargo, lo que realmente me atrajo fueron los grafitis y los arañazos que cubrían la superficie del cartel y el pulsador. Era un testimonio silencioso del paso del tiempo y de innumerables manos que lo han tocado.

(Eng) Continuing my journey, now very close to the clinic, I came across a relic from another time: a public telephone booth. The scene I captured was powerful. The booth, open and somewhat neglected, had the phone inside and a 'Department for Rent S/. 680 soles' sign pasted on its interior. This made me reflect on how technology advances and leaves behind these vestiges of what communication once was, reflecting in turn the reality of rental notices seen throughout the city.

(Esp) Continuando mi trayecto, ya muy cerca de la clínica, me encontré con una reliquia de otro tiempo: una cabina telefónica pública. La escena que capturé era potente. La cabina, abierta y un tanto descuidada, tenía el teléfono dentro y un cartel de 'Alquilo Departamento S/. 680 soles' pegado en su interior. Esto me hizo reflexionar sobre cómo la tecnología avanza y deja atrás estos vestigios de lo que fue la comunicación, reflejando a su vez la realidad de los avisos de alquiler que se ven por toda la ciudad.

(Eng) The oxidized texture and the details of the sign were perfect for my project. And to further accentuate that reflection on obsolescence and disconnection that had been on my mind, I decided to unhook the phone's receiver myself and photographed it separately. The receiver, suspended in the air, with the sidewalk and a blurred fence in the background, became a powerful visual metaphor: a symbol of a broken connection or an interrupted service, an echo of time and disconnection in the midst of life. This interaction with the booth and its unhooked phone impactfully closed the circle of my journey and my observations of the day.

(Esp) La textura oxidada y los detalles del cartel eran perfectos para mi proyecto. Y para acentuar aún más esa reflexión sobre la obsolescencia y la desconexión que me venía rondando, decidí descolgar yo mismo el auricular del teléfono y lo fotografié por separado. El auricular, suspendido en el aire, con la acera y una reja borrosa al fondo, se convirtió en una poderosa metáfora visual: un símbolo de una conexión rota o de un servicio interrumpido, un eco del tiempo y la desconexión en medio de la vida. Esta interacción con la cabina y su teléfono descolgado cerró de manera impactante el círculo de mi recorrido y mis observaciones del día.

(Eng) Thus passed my day, seeking and finding beauty in the most unexpected details from La Molina to Miraflores, transforming each scene into a brushstroke of light and shadow for my 'Monomad' collection.
