My #BeerSaturday Challenge! - Enjoying my lunch with a handcrafted elixir: Tovar IPA Beer! [Eng/Esp]

Hello everyone, friends of Beer! It's a pleasure to write to you again in this special space. Today I want to share a very special review for the #BeerSaturday Challenge. My next post was supposed to be a review of Estrella Galicia "Colorada" or Vintage beer, since in my previous review I shared my impressions of the gluten-free version of this beer while enjoying the World Cup finals. Well, it turns out my search for this vintage beer was more complicated than I expected. I couldn't find it in downtown Caracas, and even less so in the eastern part of the city. Frustrated, on my way back, I stopped at a very modest liquor store, and to my surprise, they had one of my favorite craft beers for sale: Tovar Beer! They had almost every variety, and I couldn't hide my joy at seeing this beer again. I bought three bottles of this beer that I hadn't had the chance to try before. Then, just yesterday, I had the opportunity to try the first one: Tovar Beer IPA. But before we begin, and keeping with the tradition of nominating a friend for this challenge, I want to nominate my good friend @morenow. He's in Brazil, and I'd love for him to share a beer from that region with us. Now then, let's get started!

You see, friends, this is a craft beer that comes from Colonia Tovar in Aragua State. As its name suggests, it's a colony of German immigrants who arrived in Venezuela in the mid-19th century, and since then it has become a tourist destination thanks to its striking architecture and because every October, they celebrate Oktoberfest with their own craft beer. From this history, at the beginning of the millennium, Cervecería Tovar C.A. emerged, formally producing its craft beer and selling it in the Aragua State market. You see, the national beer brand is Polar, and it practically monopolizes the sale and distribution of beer, as well as the acquisition of hops, which, due to the Caribbean climate, cannot be grown here. This makes it extremely difficult for craft breweries like Tovar to expand in the national market.

But then came the first decade of the 2000s, and with it, this political, economic, and social crisis that initially manifested as a scarcity of the most basic goods and which soon reached the major beer brands. This was the ideal opportunity for this beer brand to fill that gap, and that's how I discovered it at the end of 2018. Tasting it was like discovering a completely new flavor, which is natural; we had spent our entire lives drinking only two commercial beer brands, and then this beer arrived and opened our eyes to a new experience that I will never forget.
Since then, I've only drunk this craft beer brand, but even in the last three years, the brand has had distribution problems, so it's disappearing from the shelves again. Only in this eastern part of Caracas is this exceptional beer still available. This particular variety was recommended to me by my professor and mentor in my postgraduate studies, who made it quite clear that the IPA was the best version of Tovar Beer! So I didn't think twice and the first beer I wanted to try was this IPA.

I decided to have this beer with lunch, so I made some meatballs with a special sauce made with local coastal tomatoes, paprika, hot peppers, and turmeric. I originally wanted to make hamburgers with the meat, but we had gotten home too late—it was already 4 pm—and my nephew was starving, so I had to make pasta to go with the meatballs.

Anyway, once lunch was over, we opened the Tovar IPA, and the first thing that caught my eye was its design. It looked rustic and somewhat unrefined, as if tasting it were a challenge! That's what I love about a beer, and I realized it when I saw its alcohol content: 6%! Above the average we get in commercial beers, when poured it showed that striking intense amber color, almost orange and thicker of course since this beer being an IPA is not filtered and the intense hop aroma already invited you to take the first sip.

It was an excellent idea to pair this lunch with beer. I remembered my mentor's words about this beer, as he had visited Colonia Tovar to see how they brewed it. It's made with two types of barley and a generous amount of hops, giving it that characteristic bitterness and strong aromatic presence in equal measure. This was perfect for cleansing my palate as I enjoyed my lunch, balancing the intense flavors of fat and spicy notes. Although, to be honest, I would have loved to enjoy this beer with a good hamburger or a hot dog with German sausages!

In short, I enjoyed this wonderful beer from beginning to end. I particularly love bitter beers, and this one is simply perfect when you want to pair it with a barbecue. I like the packaging; it comes in 250 ml non-returnable bottles with an alcohol content of 6% and a bitterness of 45 IBUs, and the price is quite affordable for a craft beer at $1.50 per bottle. However, this isn't strictly an IPA; it tries to emulate British IPAs but adapted to the demands of the Venezuelan market. That's why I give this beer an 8/10. I highly recommend it if you like bitter beers that aren't overly harsh, with a strong hop presence and fruity and citrus notes that you can immediately detect when you pour it into your glass.
I hope you enjoyed this review as much as I enjoyed rediscovering this craft brewery and tasting this particular beer, which I hadn't tried before. I still have two more beers from this brewery to review, so this will be the first part of a series dedicated to Tovar beers. See you next week, cheers!
